NL: Bonds walk works in Giants' favor

The Associated Press

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Barry Bonds drew a leadoff walk to spark a six-run seventh inning Friday night that carried the San Francisco Giants over the Montreal Expos 6-5.

Bonds played despite a sore back that had kept him out of the previous two games. He said he wanted the fans in San Juan - where the Expos play 22 of their home games - to get a chance to see him in action.

Bonds went 1-for-3 with a walk and never got the ball out of the infield. His only hit was a squibber for an infield single.

With San Francisco trailing 3-0, Bonds' walk against Livan Hernandez (3-3) started the Giants' rally. After San Francisco closed to a run, Edgardo Alfonzo had a two-out, two-run single and Marquis Grissom followed with a two-run double.

San Francisco batted around, with Bonds hitting an inning-ending hard groundout.

Wayne Franklin (1-0) threw just three pitches for the win, retiring one batter in relief of Brett Tomko. Scott Eyre got out of a two-on, one-out jam in the eighth, and Matt Herges pitched the ninth for his 12th save in 14 chances.

The six-run inning may have been the kind of thing needed by the Giants, who largely have failed to produce anyone to hit behind Bonds. It's one reason he has 29 intentional walks and is on pace to shatter the record of 68 he set in 2002.

Batting behind Bonds on Friday, Pedro Feliz went 1-for-4, including a single that came after Bonds' leadoff walk in the seventh.

No. 8 hitter Neifi Perez, who had a game-winning homer Thursday, went 2-for-4 as San Francisco scored six runs in a game for the first time since May 9.

Mets 9, Rockies 7

NEW YORK - Mike Piazza homered and Danny Garcia and Jason Phillips each had two of New York's nine doubles as the Mets gave Matt Ginter (1-0) his first win as a starter.

New York got six runs in the first three innings on eight hits, including a home run and five doubles, against Colorado rookie Jason Young (0-1).

Braves 2, Dodgers 0

ATLANTA - Chipper Jones homered in the seventh for Atlanta to break up a scoreless duel between Russ Ortiz and Odalis Perez.

The loss was the eighth in a row for Los Angeles, its longest slide since June 1992, when it lost 10 straight.

Phillies 5, Padres 4

PHILADELPHIA - Chase Utley had three RBI, including a go-ahead single in the eighth inning that capped Philadelphia's comeback from a three-run deficit.

Brian Giles homered for the second straight night and had three RBI for San Diego.

Cardinals 7, Cubs 6

CHICAGO - Albert Pujols and Jim Edmonds hit consecutive home runs for St. Louis, which won its third straight game and moved a season-high four games above .500.

Moises Alou hit a three-run homer in the Cubs' seventh inning but struck out to the game.

Brewers-Pirates postponed

PITTSBURGH - The opener of a three-game series was postponed because of expected 70 mph winds and thunderstorms. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader July 2.
