NL: Light-hitting Perez jolts Giants to win

The Associated Press

CHICAGO - The San Francisco Giants got a dramatic home run of their own from a most unlikely source.

Neifi Perez hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning Thursday, spoiling another late home run by Moises Alou and lifting the short-handed Giants to a 5-3 win over the Chicago Cubs. Pedro Feliz had a homer and two RBI for the Giants.

"It's easy in games like this to say, 'Ahh, let's just get this game over with. Somebody hit a home run - who cares who it is,' " said Matt Herges, who pitched two scoreless innings for the win. "But we fought, and lo and behold, Neifi - beautiful, beautiful. It definitely surprised me."

It was Perez's first home run of the year, coming in his 150th at-bat. He sent the first pitch he saw from Joe Borowski (2-2) into the right-field bleachers.

"I'm struggling right now," said Perez, who is hitting .201. "I'm hitting the ball, but somebody's catching it. Thank God that I hit the home run today. I helped us."

The Cubs beat the Giants 4-3 in 10 innings Wednesday when Alou made his father, Giants manager Felipe Alou, pay for a pitching switch. The younger Alou did it again Thursday, tying the game with a two-run shot in the seventh after his father replaced lefty Scott Eyre with Felix Rodriguez.

Alou got another at-bat in the bottom of the 10th for the Cubs. But Herges (1-2) retired him on a fly ball and Aramis Ramirez grounded out to end the game.

Braves 5, Diamondbacks 1

ATLANTA - Horacio Ramirez pitched a three-hitter for his second career complete game and had two singles and an RBI for Atlanta. Julio Franco homered for the second night in a row, and J.D. Drew hit a two-run triple for the Braves.

Pirates 9, Padres 7

PITTSBURGH - Daryle Ward and Jason Bay each homered twice and had three RBI for Pittsburgh, which overcame a six-run deficit. The Pirates' comeback prevented San Diego from sweeping a road series for the first time this season and ended Pittsburgh's six-game home losing streak.

Phillies 4, Dodgers 0

PHILADELPHIA - Brett Myers pitched a five-hitter for his second career shutout, and Philadelphia sent Los Angeles to its seventh straight loss. Chase Utley homered for the National League East-leading Phillies, who swept the three-game series and have won 10 of their last 13 games overall.

Marlins 6, Astros 2

MIAMI - Mike Lowell homered twice for Florida - both solo shots - increasing his total to 13 this season.

Josh Beckett (4-3) allowed five hits and two runs in 7 2/3 innings. He struck out seven and walked three.

Cardinals 11, Mets 4

NEW YORK - So Taguchi had four hits, driving in two runs and scoring two more to lead St. Louis.

Scott Rolen hit a two-run shot in the ninth as the Cardinals batted around and broke open the game by scoring six runs with the help of three New York errors.

Brewers 3, Expos 2

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Milwaukee's Scott Podsednik hit the go-ahead home run off Rocky Biddle in the ninth.

Podsednik took a 2-1 pitch over the right-field wall against Biddle (0-2), who was brought in to protect a tie game.
