ATLANTA - Since turning 40 last September, Randy Johnson has tossed a one-hitter, a two-hitter and, now, the ultimate masterpiece - a perfect game.
Johnson became the 17th pitcher and oldest to accomplish the feat when he led the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 2-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night.
"I've made a lot of adjustments over the years as far as my workout routine, and how I approach the game and my demeanor on the mound and things like that," Johnson said. "I feel like I'm throwing as good as I've ever thrown."
Steve Finley had a good view of Johnson's pitches while playing center field. He was amazed.
"Almost nothing went over the middle of the plate," Finley said. "He was hitting the corners all night, but the problem for the hitters was that most of those pitches came in there at 97, 98 and 99 mph."
CUBS: Sammy Sosa was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a sprained ligament in his lower back, caused by two violent sneezes Sunday in San Diego.
BREWERS: Third baseman Wes Helms slipped on wet steps outside the clubhouse Wednesday and sprained his right knee, which kept him out of the lineup against Montreal and forced him home for tests.
PHILLIES: First baseman Jim Thome will sit out at least two games with a sprained index finger, and pitcher Randy Wolf will miss a start because of elbow tendinitis.
Thome sprained the ligaments in his right index finger afterchanging his bat grip to compensate for the thumb injury.
GIANTS: Barry Bonds' back started hurting again and the he was out of the lineup for Wednesday night's game with the Chicago Cubs.
"We're not making plans for him to play (today)," Giants manager Felipe Alou said.
MARLINS: Utilityman Wil Cordero was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with right knee inflammation.
PIRATES: The team cited breach of contract and terminated the contract of outfielder Raul Mondesi, who was hitting .283 with two homers and 14 RBIs when he left them to return to his native Dominican Republic and fight a lawsuit.
INDIANS: The team acquired pitcher Andrew Brown on Wednesday, completing last month's trade that sent outfielder Milton Bradley to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Brown, 23, went 1-3 with a 4.02 ERA in eight starts for Double-A Jacksonville. He led the Southern League with 58 strikeouts.
DEVIL RAYS: Fred McGriff has decided to join Triple-A Durham, and the team expects to promote him to the majors by the end of May. McGriff is nine home runs short of 500.
