TORONTO - Roy Halladay outpitched Pedro Martinez after losing their first two matchups this season, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox 3-1 Sunday.

Carlos Delgado hit a two-run homer for the Blue Jays, who gained a split of the four-game series.

Halladay (4-4) worked seven strong innings, allowing one run and six hits - all singles - while striking out six and walking two. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner lost to Martinez on April 10 and 20, though he pitched well both times.

Jason Frasor worked a scoreless eighth, and Terry Adams got three outs for his second save.

Martinez (4-3), a three-time Cy Young winner, gave up three runs and six hits in seven innings and has won just one of his last four starts.

The Red Sox dropped a half-game behind the first-place New York Yankees in the AL East.

Yankees 2, Mariners 1

NEW YORK - Kevin Brown held down Seattle for 7 2-3 innings, and John Flaherty hit his first homer since August to lead New York over Seattle.

The 39-year-old right-hander, acquired from Los Angeles in December, is 5-0 for the first time since 1990, when he pitched for Texas. He's also the first Yankees pitcher to open with five winning decisions since Roger Clemens in 1999.

Mariano Rivera finished for his 14th save in 15 chances.

Joel Pineiro (1-5) lost his fourth consecutive decision, pitching a five-hitter for Seattle's first complete game since Jamie Moyer's six-hitter against Anaheim last Sept. 22. Skidding Seattle finished a 1-5 trip and has lost seven of eight.

Indians 10, Devil Rays 0

CLEVELAND - C.C. Sabathia pitched seven sharp innings and Cleveland completed a three-game sweep.

Sabathia (2-1) gave up five hits and struck out six, improving to 5-0 in five career starts against Tampa Bay.

Travis Hafner and Ben Broussard each drove in four runs as the Indians won their fourth in a row and fifth in six games since a five-game losing streak.

Doug Waechter (1-4) lost his fourth straight start, allowing four hits and six unearned runs in 4 1-3 innings.

Tigers 3, Rangers 1

DETROIT - Jason Johnson pitched five strong innings before leaving with a blister, and three Tigers relievers combined to throw four shutout innings.

Omar Infante homered and Alex Sanchez had three hits for the Tigers, who have won three of four.

Johnson (2-5) left after the fifth because of a blister on his pitching hand. He allowed one run on five hits, and struck out a season-best seven, one short of his career high.

Al Levine replaced Johnson and pitched two perfect innings, Esteban Yan allowed one hit in an inning, and Ugueth Urbina got three outs for his sixth save.

Ryan Drese (2-1) lost for the first time in six starts this season, giving up three runs on nine hits in 6 2-3 innings.

White Sox 11, Twins 0

CHICAGO - Jose Valentin and Joe Crede homered to back Mark Buehrle's solid pitching performance, and the White Sox avoided a three-game sweep.

Buehrle (3-1) allowed seven hits and struck out seven in 6 2-3 shutout innings to improve to 11-4 against the Twins.

Valentin drove in four runs, and Magglio Ordonez three in Chicago's 15-hit attack.

Twins starter Carlos Silva (5-1) suffered just his second major league defeat, giving up eight hits and six runs in just three innings.

Athletics 6, Royals 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Bobby Crosby had a homer among his three hits and drove in two runs Sunday, leading Oakland to its first series sweep of the season.

Erubiel Durazo also homered for the A's, who won their seventh straight against the Royals - all in Kansas City - and have won seven of their last 10.

Oakland left-hander Barry Zito (3-3) gave up Joe Randa's two-run triple in the first inning but recovered to pitch through the sixth before giving way to Jim Mecir. Zito gave up two runs on four hits, striking out three.

Brian Anderson (1-5) lost his fifth straight start for the first time since Aug.-Sept. 1995. He lasted 6 1-3 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

Orioles 4, Angels 0

BALTIMORE - Sidney Ponson pitched a five-hitter to end a run of four poor starts, Jerry Hairston drove in two runs and Javy Lopez had three hits as Baltimore snapped a three-game losing streak by beating Anaheim.

Ponson (3-3) retired 19 of the final 21 batters. He struck out four and walked one in his second complete game of the season and 23rd of his career.

Signed as a free agent in January and assigned the role of ace of the staff, Ponson was 0-3 with a 10.29 ERA in his previous four starts.

Anaheim's Kelvim Escobar (2-2) allowed three runs and seven hits in losing for the first time in four starts since April 18.
