Yanks' Posada speaks of quick return

The Associated Press

NEW YORK - Joe Torre saw Jorge Posada walking across the Yankees clubhouse, a white bandage over the catcher's nose.

"Hey, Jorge," the manager said. "That thing is still not bigger than my nose."

The Yankees were in a good mood before Thursday's 7-4 win over Anaheim because Posada thinks his broken nose will sideline him for only a few days.

Posada was hurt Wednesday night breaking up a double play in the second inning when Anaheim rookie shortstop Alfredo Amezaga made a submarine relay that ricocheted off Posada's hand and hit him in the nose.

Amezaga immediately apologized to Posada, and the four-time All-Star catcher said Thursday there were no hard feelings. In the meantime, the Yankees have called up David Parrish, son of former Detroit catcher Lance Parrish.

EXPOS: Umpire Paul Nauert filed a report with Major League Baseball after a bat was thrown in his direction by Montreal's Terrmel Sledge on Wednesday night.

Nauert, who was working behind the plate, took offense after Sledge tossed his bat in disgust after hitting a popup to shallow center field in the seventh inning.

DEVIL RAYS: A group headed by New York investor Stuart Sternberg completed its purchase of 48 percent of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Vince Naimoli will continue in his role as the team's managing general partner, running day-to-day operations. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

TED WILLIAMS SUIT: The executor of Ted Williams' estate has sued the late Hall of Famer's oldest daughter and her husband, alleging they violated an agreement by repeatedly voicing their opposition to the placement of his body in deep freeze at an Arizona lab.

INJURY REPORT: Mets left-hander Al Leiter is scheduled to have an MRI today on his shoulder. ... Toronto shortstop Chris Woodward is going on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring. ... The Rangers placed relief pitcher Jeff Nelson on the DL with an inflamed right knee.
