Yankees make it six wins in a row

NEW YORK - Mike Mussina pitched seven innings, Hideki Matsui hit a go-ahead single and the New York Yankees won their sixth straight game Sunday with a 4-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals.

The Yankees completed a three-game sweep of the Royals, who have dropped four in a row and 14 of 17. Joe Torre got his 800th win as Yankee manager.

Mariano Rivera got his ninth save in nine chances.

Jason Giambi homered off Jeremy Affeldt (0-3) for his fifth this season.

Devil Rays 8, Athletics 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Rocco Baldelli hit a two-run homer and Mark Hendrickson pitched six solid innings, helping Tampa Bay snap a six-game losing streak.

Hendrickson (1-2) allowed two runs and six hits. His victory snapped a stretch of 20 consecutive winless starts by Tampa Bay left-handers dating to Joe Kennedy's win against Toronto last May 13.

Tim Hudson, who was 5-0 against the Devil Rays, allowed eight runs and nine hits in seven innings.

Eric Byrnes homered for Oakland, which has dropped nine of 13.

Angels 3, Twins 1

MINNEAPOLIS - John Lackey pitched seven strong innings, and Jose Guillen's tiebreaking, two-run single in the eighth gave Anaheim its eighth win in 10 games.

Troy Percival picked up his seventh save.

Michael Cuddyer homered for Minnesota, its only run in the last two games.

Lackey (2-3) allowed six hits in seven innings, striking out five for his second straight win.

J.C. Romero (1-1) surrendered Guillen's go-ahead hit.

White Sox 3, Blue Jays 2

CHICAGO - Jon Garland gave up two runs in seven-plus innings, Frank Thomas homered and Chicago took three of four from Toronto in the series.

Garland (2-1) scattered 10 hits and struck out five. Billy Koch pitched the ninth for his third save.

Miguel Batista (0-3) allowed three runs and six hits in eight innings.

Gregg Zaun went 4-for-4 for Toronto.

Mariners 12, Tigers 2

DETROIT - Gil Meche pitched six solid innings, Scott Spiezio hit a two-run homer and Brett Boone hit a three-run shot as Seattle set a season high for runs.

Meche (1-2) allowed two runs and four hits, and three relievers finished with three hitless innings.

Nate Cornejo (1-3) was tagged for four runs in 4 1/3 innings.
