DETROIT - Cleveland's C.C. Sabathia is expected to be sidelined for at least a week after straining his biceps tendon.
"If all goes the way we hope, we're potentially looking at next weekend to get him back out there," Indians manager Eric Wedge said Friday.
Sabathia experienced soreness in the tendon Thursday while preparing to start against Kansas City and was removed from the lineup just before the game. An MRI exam showed nothing more than a strained tendon, and he was able to play catch without pain in the outfield before Friday's game.
The Indians and Kansas City Royals will make up Wednesday night's rainout in a July 24 doubleheader. The makeup game will be at 1:05 p.m., with the regularly scheduled game still at 7:05 p.m.
The Indians called up right-hander Jason Anderson from Triple-A Buffalo to help their struggling bullpen. Anderson was 1-0 with a save and a 1.93 ERA in three games at Buffalo.
PHILLIES: Philadelphia's protest of a game against the Florida Marlins was denied Friday by the commissioner's office.
Bob DuPuy, baseball's chief operating officer, rejected manager Larry Bowa's protest stemming from Florida's 8-7, 12-inning win Wednesday.
Placido Polanco led off the ninth with a hit to left field. The ball got stuck under the padding on the wall, prompting outfielder Jeff Conine to throw up his hands. Polanco circled the bases, but the umpires called it a ground-rule double and sent Polanco back to second.
Bowa protested, saying Conine should have had to play the ball because it was clearly visible.
METS: Third baseman Ty Wigginton has an ulcer and could be released from the hospital today.
Wigginton, who is on the 15-day disabled list, will go to Florida for a rehab stint, Mets manager Art Howe said Friday. Wigginton can't return until May 6.
The Mets recalled infielder Danny Garcia from Triple-A Norfolk to take his roster spot.
AND THE WHIFF: Senior Johnny Spencer of Bacone College struck out 25 against Jarvis Christian in a 4-0 victory Thursday, one shy of the NAIA record.
Spencer pitched a two-hitter. Only four batters put the ball in play.
Miami University's Buddy Schultz fanned 26 against Wright State in 1973 for the NCAA record. He later pitched for the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals.
Cary Spain of Belmont (Tenn.) struck out 26 in 1979 in a 15-inning game for the NAIA mark.
The major league record is 20, held by Roger Clemens (twice), Kerry Wood and Randy Johnson.
SHORT HOPS: The Texas Rangers changed backup outfielders, sending down prospect Ramon Nivar to Triple-A Oklahoma and calling up Chad Allen. The 29-year-old Allen was hitting .518, tops in the minors, with a homer, six doubles and 13 RBI. Nivar was hitting .222 with four RBI in seven games.
The Milwaukee Brewers placed left-handed pitcher Chris Capuano on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right thigh. The Brewers recalled right-hander Chris Saenz from Double-A Huntsville, where he was 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA in two starts.
