NL: Astros lose, half-game ahead of Reds

By The Associated Press

HOUSTON - Reggie Sanders homered in the third inning and snatched away a Jeff Bagwell shot at the right-field wall in the fifth. Albert Pujols added a two-run homer to help the Cardinals break a four-game losing streak at Houston.

Jeff Suppan (1-2) allowed one run and five hits in six innings, and Jason Isringhausen got five outs for his second save.

Wade Miller (2-1), who had won five straight decisions against St. Louis, gave up five runs and five hits in six innings.

Cubs 9, Pirates 1

PITTSBURGH - Alex Gonzalez homered, doubled and drove in four runs and the Chicago Cubs beat up on Ryan Vogelsong for the second time in a week, defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Corey Patterson, Todd Walker and Michael Barrett also homered to back Carlos Zambrano (2-0). The Cubs won for the fifth time in seven games and ended the Pirates' three-game winning streak.

Zambrano limited the Pirates to one run and seven hits, striking out four and walking two over eight innings. He beat Vogelsong (1-2) for the second straight start.

Brewers 4, Diamondbacks 2

MILWAUKEE - Lyle Overbay and Junior Spivey, two of the six players the Milwaukee Brewers got for Richie Sexson, each had three hits in the win over Arizona.

Altogether, the four everyday starters who came over in the Sexson trade went 8-for-16 with Craig Counsell and Chad Moeller also collecting singles against their former team.

Sexson went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.

Arizona lost second baseman Roberto Alomar for an undetermined about of time with a broken bone in his right hand when he was hit by a pitch from Ben Sheets (3-0) in the sixth inning.

Geoff Jenkins homered off Elmer Dessens (0-2).

Rockies 7, Dodgers 1

DENVER - Vinny Castilla homered and drove in two runs, and Charles Johnson and Jeromy Burnitz hit back-to-back homers in the second inning to help end the Dodgers' five-game winning streak.

Joe Kennedy (2-0) struck out seven and allowed six hits in winning consecutive starts for the first time since July 30 and Aug. 4, 2002.

Kazuhisa Ishii (2-1) lasted only four innings, giving up seven runs and eight hits.

Expos 2, Mets 1

NEW YORK - Jose Vidro led off the eighth inning with a tiebreaking home run and the Montreal Expos snapped an eight-game losing streak, beating the New York Mets 2-1 Tuesday night.

Montreal had been on its worst skid since the 2000 season. The Expos are the first team to not score more than four runs in any of its first 14 games since the 1988 Texas Rangers, according to the Elias Sport Bureau.

Zach Day (1-1) limited the Mets to four hits in seven innings. Luis Ayala pitched the eighth, and Rocky Biddle needed just six pitches to complete the four-hitter and get his third save in three chances.

David Weathers (1-1) relieved Al Leiter to start the eighth and Vidro, his first batter, connected on a 3-2 pitch.

Marlins 3, Phillies 1

PHILADELPHIA - Dontrelle Willis allowed an unearned run in 6 2-3 innings, leading the Florida Marlins to their 11th straight victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Willis (3-0) struck out in his first at-bat, snapping his streak of 10 consecutive hits, dating to last season and including the playoffs.

But Florida's hitters gave him all the runs he'd need to stop the Phillies' four-game winning streak.

The NL Rookie of the Year gave up four hits, struck out three and walked none. Chad Fox pitched 1 1-3 scoreless innings, and Armando Benitez worked a perfect ninth for his seventh save in as many chances.

Vicente Padilla (0-2) took the loss.

Padres 9, Giants 5

SAN FRANCISCO - Barry Bonds homered in his seventh straight game, but San Francisco lost to San Diego.

Bonds is one shy of matching the major league record for consecutive games with a homer - shared by Dale Long (1956), Don Mattingly (1987) and Ken Griffey Jr. (1993).

Bonds has homered in the last seven games in which he has had an at-bat. He walked intentionally as a pinch-hitter last Wednesday, which does not stop the streak under baseball's rules.

His ninth homer of the season was a two-run shot off Brian Lawrence (2-1).

Brian Giles hit a two-run homer off Dustin Hermanson (1-1) and Sean Burroughs had two doubles among his four hits and drove in two runs for San Diego.
