Alomar suffers fractured hand

Major-league notebook

The Associated Press

MILWAUKEE - Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Roberto Alomar broke a bone in his right hand Tuesday when he was hit by a pitch from Milwaukee's Ben Sheets in the sixth inning.

The Diamondbacks were uncertain how long Alomar would be sidelined.

X-rays revealed a fracture of the bone connecting the pinky and the wrist. Alomar was placed in a splint and will be re-evaluated.

YANKEES: Looking to shake his slump, Alex Rodriguez turned to a simple approach Tuesday.

He bunted for a base hit in the New York Yankees' seven-run first inning against the Chicago White Sox.

With two on and none out, Rodriguez dropped a bunt and was credited with a single when third baseman Joe Crede threw wildly, allowing a run to score.

Before the game, Rodriguez sat beside hitting coach Don Mattingly and studied video of his recent at-bats. If his slump - he went 1-for-17 in Boston, dropping him to .160 - has been the talk of New York, he appears unfazed.

"I have a track record and my track record starts with hard work and my talent. I feel I have a special talent and I'm not really concerned about that," he said.

ORIOLES: Jay Gibbons and David Segui were held out of the starting lineup Tuesday and are day-to-day. Gibbons had a strained lower back and Segui a sore knee.

CUBS: Right-hander Mark Prior plans to throw off a mound today as he tries to recover from an Achilles' tendon injury and a sore right elbow. The Cubs haven't set a timetable for Prior's return, although mid-May has been mentioned.

ASTROS: Pitcher Andy Pettitte will be held out of his scheduled Friday start against Colorado to give his strained left elbow more time to heal.

Pettitte, eligible to come off the 15-day disabled list Thursday, instead will pitch a simulated game Friday at Houston's spring training facility in Kissimmee, Fla. He said he should be ready for his next start, April 29 at Pittsburgh.

RANGERS: Right-hander Colby Lewis was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Sunday, because of stiffness in his pitching shoulder.

INDIANS: Rookie pitcher Jason Stanford was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left forearm. Jeriome Robertson, a left-hander, led major-league rookies with 15 wins a year ago, was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo.
