Hot corner

Cincinnati Enquirer

What more can you say about Barry Bonds? Love him or hate him, he just keeps knocking milestones into McCovey Cove. (And that same guy in the boat keeps catching them.)

It's appropriate, though, that Bonds catches and passes his godfather, Willie Mays, for third on the all-time HR list with Nos. 660 and 661 just days before Baseball celebrated the 30th anniversary of Hank Aaron passing Babe Ruth for No. 1 on the list.

Not so hot

Yes, it's far, far too early to panic if you're living in Seattle, Arizona and St. Louis. After all, these are veteran clubs which, as they say, know how to win and, more importantly, know how not to panic over a slow start. And in the Cardinals' and Diamondbacks' cases, they weren't really all that far out heading into the weekend and their divisions aren't the strongest. Still, last place is last place. As for the Mariners ... well, they're in a different position. Fact is, with the powerhouse Athletics rotation and the much-improved Angels sprinting ahead in the AL West, Seattle can't afford to fall too far back. Remember, the Mariners' core players include veterans John Olerud, Edgar Martinez, Bret Boone, Rich Aurilia and Jamie Moyer, all of whom are hovering near if not over the age of 40. It's a fine line between "wily vet" and "over the hill" - especially when they have to play catch-up.

Marlins pitcher Dontrelle Willis does more than throw strikes. He hits them, too. The reigning National League Rookie of the Year is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 12 2/3 innings on the mound. At the plate, with teammate Juan Pierre's bat in hand, Willis is 6-for-6 with one home run and three RBI. "I only hit one home run a year," Pierre said, "so he's already taken that." Pierre had four career home runs in 521 games entering this season. --Kevin Kelly

Good pitchin'

Two New York Yankees - right-handers Mike Mussina and Kevin Brown - reached the 200-career win milestone already this season. Here are the active win leaders going into this weekend:
