Tim Wakefield shut down the Yankees' third baseman six months too late.
Boston's knuckleballer ruined Alex Rodriguez's visit to the park that nearly was his home, holding him to an infield single and leading the Red Sox to a 6-2 win over New York before a packed house at Fenway on Friday night.
Last October, third baseman Aaron Boone won the AL championship series for New York when he hit Wakefield's first pitch of the 11th inning into the left-field seats for a 6-5 win in Game 7 at Yankee Stadium.
Rodriguez finished 1-for-4 after lining out in the eighth against Scott Williamson and didn't hit the ball out of the infield.
Manny Ramirez, who would have been traded for Rodriguez, AL batting champion Bill Mueller and Doug Mirabelli homered off Javier Vazquez (1-1). Jorge Posada hit his fifth homer for New York.
Wakefield (1-0) allowed two runs, five hits and four walks in seven innings. He struck out four.
Orioles 11, Blue Jays 2
TORONTO - Javy Lopez homered to spark a six-run second inning, and Matt Riley pitched one-hit ball for seven dominant innings as the Baltimore Orioles routed the Toronto Blue Jays 11-2 Friday night.
The Blue Jays managed just two hits in all, and Miguel Batista (0-2) had poor command throughout his four-plus innings.
The Orioles, boosted by the offseason signings of Lopez, Miguel Tejada and Rafael Palmeiro, took full advantage, jumping out to a big lead en route to their second straight win.
Indians 10, Tigers 3
CLEVELAND - Jody Gerut went 5-for-5 with three RBI to help C.C. Sabathia get his first win this season. Gerut homered, doubled three times and singled as the Indians battered Nate Cornejo (1-1) while winning the first of seven games in 10 days between the teams.
The Indians also hit reliever Ugueth Urbina, whom they decided not to sign as a free agent during spring training. Urbina gave up one run and two hits in his first appearance since Game 6 of the World Series for Florida. Detroit signed Urbina to a one-year deal after the Indians passed on the right-hander.
Devil Rays 3, White Sox 0
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Paul Abbott allowed four hits in seven innings, and Tampa Bay got home runs from Carl Crawford and Julio Lugo.
Abbott (1-1) struck out five and walked two. Only one runner - Willie Harris in the first inning - reached second base against the right-hander. Tampa Bay (5-4) matched its best start to a season through nine games.
The Devil Rays are 5-1 in games not started by New York Yankees right-hander Kevin Brown, who already beat Tampa Bay three times this season.
Trever Miller, Chad Gaudin and Danys Baez completed the four-hitter. Baez pitched the ninth for his first save.
White Sox starter Dan Wright (0-2) went 4 2/3 innings for the second consecutive start. He allowed three runs and five hits during his 82-pitch outing.
Chicago had won three straight. The White Sox came up short in a bid for their first 7-3 start since 1991.
Crawford put the Devil Rays up 1-0 with his first career leadoff homer. It was also his first home run since Sept. 9, 2003.
Lugo made it 3-0 with a two-run shot in the second. Going back to last season, he has 12 homers in his last 47 games.
Chicago reliever Shingo Takatsu retired all five batters he faced - including two on strikeouts - in his second major-league appearance. The career saves leader in Japan allowed two runs in one inning in his big league debut April 9 against the Yankees.
