Hot corner

The Detroit Tigers - yes, those Detroit Tigers, the team that won only 43 games last season - sprinted to a 4-0 start before losing Saturday. Actually, they're not the same team, having added veterans like Pudge Rodriguez, Rondell White, Fernando Vina and Ugueth Urbina.

Not all went the Tigers' way - former Red Dmitri Young broke his leg and will be out at least six weeks.

Not-so-hot corner

Don't you just hate that guy behind you at the ballpark who doesn't really understand the concept of "context" and looks at first-week stats and interprets them as though it's the end of June? Well, since the first week of the season is in the books, let's be that fan, just once. Here goes: Ahhhhhh-haaaaaaaaa, Alex Rodriguez, Mr. $25 million-a-year, hitting .188! Oh, look, Jim Thome - .125!!!! Thought he was supposed to be good! Oh, and look at John Smoltz! Some closer! He has a 13.50 ERA!
