Marlins' Pierre dislocates finger

MLB notebook

The Associated Press

JUPITER, Fla. - Florida Marlins center fielder Juan Pierre dislocated his right pinkie Sunday while sliding headfirst on a steal attempt.

Pierre's return to the World Series champions is uncertain. He could come back within a week if the injury is not too serious, or he might miss up to six weeks if there's ligament damage.

Pierre, who led the majors last season with 65 stolen bases, was taken to the hospital for X-rays, which confirmed the dislocation. He was scheduled to see a hand specialist Monday.

CARDINALS: Boston traded infielder Tony Womack to the St. Louis for minor league pitcher Matt Duff.

The 34-year-old Womack played the final five weeks of last season with an injured right elbow for the Chicago Cubs. He had reconstructive surgery in October.

Womack batted .226 with two home runs, 22 RBI and 13 stolen bases for Arizona, Colorado and the Cubs last season.

RANGERS: Alfonso Soriano extended his spring hitting streak to 12 games and the Rangers beat a Colorado split squad 6-1.

Soriano, traded to Texas in the deal that sent Alex Rodriguez to the New York Yankees, began the day batting .405, best in the Cactus League.

The two-time All-Star second baseman went 1-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base.

"I usually hit very well in spring training, but you don't expect this," Soriano said.

SHORT HOPS: Sammy Sosa hit a tiebreaking single and Derrek Lee went 3-for-3 to help the Cubs beat the Padres 7-6.

• Jermaine Dye hit his first home run of the spring and Tim Hudson retired his final 14 batters to lead the Athletics over the Giants 8-6.

• Mike Sweeney hit his fourth homer of the spring, connecting against Bartolo Colon in the Royals' 3-2 victory over the Angels.

• Jamie Moyer looks just as good as last year. Moyer, 41, pitched six strong innings in 96-degree heat, sending the Mariners to a 12-2 victory over the White Sox. "I'm running out of things to say," catcher Dan Wilson said. "He's like a broken record."

• Billy Wagner gave up two runs with two outs in the ninth inning, with former Phillies infielder Nick Punto hitting an RBI triple that rallied the Twins to a 9-8 victory. Punto, traded to the Twins in the offseason in the deal for Eric Milton, also doubled and singled.
