Focus on steroids upsetting to Selig

MLB notebook

The Associated Press

TEMPE, Ariz. - Commissioner Bud Selig hopes Major League Baseball can institute a zero-tolerance policy on steroid use similar to one that covers players with minor-league contracts.

Selig, attending Anaheim's game against San Diego, sought to put baseball's focus back on the field. He spent several minutes fending off steroid-related questions, and he said Baseball could set an attendance mark this season, based on preseason ticket sales.

"We've got a great year ahead," he said. "The fact that we're sitting here with all these questions about steroids saddens me. When the focus is not on what's going on on the field, there's no question that the sport is hurt."

Selig said he "won't deal with hypotheticals" when asked about possible penalties levied against a player found to have used steroids.

MARLINS: Reliever Ugueth Urbina plans to wear the Florida Marlins' huge new championship ring on his thumb. Third baseman Mike Lowell jokes that he'll need a bodyguard to protect it. Manager Jack McKeon says he'll be reluctant to wear it all the time.

"I don't want to get a sore arm," McKeon said.

Owner Jeffrey Loria sought to set a new standard for championship bling-bling with the 14-carat gold ring unveiled Friday at Marlins' spring training. The stats are impressive: 228 white diamonds, 13 rubies and a single teal diamond in the eye of a marlin.

DODGERS: Bob Graziano has resigned as president of the team.

Graziano notified new owners Frank and Jamie McCourt sometime in the past two weeks, Dodgers vice president Derrick Hall said.

"Bob and the McCourts have had discussions and it became clear that Bob wouldn't be president in the future," Hall said. "Bob has requested termination of his employment as a result."

GIANTS: Ace Jason Schmidt got hit hard in his first outing since undergoing offseason elbow surgery, and the Giants lost 4-1 to the Cubs.

Michael Barrett's two-run triple keyed a four-run second inning against Schmidt, who underwent arthroscopic surgery on his pitching elbow in October. Schmidt allowed four runs and five hits in the second following a perfect first.

"I felt good, really good - almost too good," said Schmidt, who led the National League with a 2.34 ERA last season.

SHORT HOPS: Bobby Smith's RBI single in the 10th inning lifted the White Sox past the Diamondbacks 4-3 in a matchup of split squads Friday. With a 3-0 win against the Rockies in their other game, the White Sox improved to 2-0 under new manager Ozzie Guillen.

• Vladimir Guerrero and Jose Guillen each had two hits in their first two at-bats with Anaheim, and the Angels beat the San Diego Padres 8-7.

• In his first spring game, Brad Penny picked up from where he left off in the World Series last year.

Penny pitched three perfect innings in Florida's 6-0 victory over the Orioles. He threw 42 pitches, 26 for strikes.

"He had good stuff, pretty good command," McKeon said. "Really all of them looked good."

• Roy Oswalt pitched two perfect innings without discomfort in his first live action since undergoing offseason groin surgery, and his outing was a rare bright spot in Houston's 14-2 loss to Cleveland.
