Inside spring training

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Meet the Reds: Brian Reith

Position: Pitcher

Age: 26

Height/Weight: 6-5, 220 pounds.

Throws/Bats: Right/right

Born/Resides: Fort Wayne, Ind./Tampa, Fla.

How acquired: Traded, along with Drew Henson, Jackson Melian and Ed Yarnall, from the New York Yankees to the Reds in exchange for pitcher Denny Neagle and outfielder Mike Frank in July 2000.

Favorite TV show: SportsCenter.

Favorite movie: "I really don't have one. I'm not much for movies."

Other than baseball he likes to: "Golf. I also love anything around the water. After I signed with the Yankees, I moved down to Tampa."

Fun fact: Reith was a Phillie for 27 days in 2002. The Phillies claimed him on waivers July 11 of that year. The Reds claimed him back Aug. 6.

Injury report

Nothing new. But two players will be held back in the intrasquad game. Austin Kearns will be used as a designated hitter, and Felipe Lopez will be held out.

Kearns is still on a throwing program while he recovers from offseason shoulder surgery. He'll DH in exhibition road games to American League clubs and be used as a pinch-hitter at home and in NL parks.

The Reds are limiting Lopez, who is coming back from ankle surgery, on sliding. "He feels great," Reds manager Dave Miley said. "He's really been outstanding. It's more mental than anything. We want him to get comfortable with it."

On deck

The Reds will have their final day of two-a-day workouts today. It will be a slightly shortened day. The first of two intrasquad games is Tuesday.

Speed cut

Ryan Freel went from a curly, long-haired look to a military buzz Saturday night. He was not worried about a Sampson effect.

"I don't care about power," he said. "I'm looking for speed. I think the wind was getting caught up in my hair and slowing me down. I felt like I lost a step."

That won't be a problem from now on. Freel bought himself a pair of clippers, so the haircut was self-inflicted.

Quote of the day

Adam Dunn on Danny Graves: "Danny is the coolest person I know. He's got a cool wife, cool kids, cool cars and a cool house."
