Inside training camp

Name: Cory Lidle

Position: Pitcher

Height/Weight: 5-11, 192 pounds

Bats/Throws: Right, right

Born/resides: Hollywood, Calif., Glendora, Calif.

How acquired: Signed one-year contract as a free agent Dec. 29.

Favorite movie: Bull Durham

Favorite TV show: Seinfeld

Besides baseball he likes to: "Three things, shoot pool, play golf and I'm getting into poker. I started watching Texas Hold'em. Some of my friends play. I play online."

Trivial speaking: Lidle was a high school teammate of Jason Giambi and is an ancestor of Robert Fulton, the inventor of the steamboat.

Inside camp: Looking ahead

40-man roster players work out from 9:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. today. Non-roster players work out from 1:15 to 4:15 p.m. They'll continue with that schedule over the next six days, leading up to the intrasquad games on March 1 and 2.

Injuries

Nothing new. But D.J. Mattox, the right-hander the Reds picked from the New York Mets in the Rule 5 Draft, has been pulled out of throwing with a tender elbow. "It's a precaution," Mattox said. "I should be OK in a few days."

Mistaken identity

Sean Casey thought he was getting e-mail from bullpen coach Tom Hume in the offseason. Until he talked to Hume. "I said, 'I got your emails.' He said, 'I never e-mailed you.' " Turns out it was teammate Tim Hummel.

Quote of the day

"We had the meeting (Monday night) and people talked about the pride there was in the Cincinnati Reds tradition," Casey said. "All the history and the great players. We've gotten away from it for a few years."
