Late flurry at Winter Meetings

Expos get Everett; Suppan to Cards

The Associated Press

NEW ORLEANS - Carl Everett, Scott Spiezio, Jeff Suppan and Roberto Hernandez switched teams in a late flurry, while potential deals for Alex Rodriguez, Vladimir Guerrero and other stars stayed on hold Monday when the Winter Meetings ended.

The Baltimore Orioles packed up, having signed Miguel Tejada and still hoping to lure Guerrero, Ivan Rodriguez or Javy Lopez.

"We're not ready to step up and meet their demands, but we'll continue the conversations," Orioles vice president Jim Beattie said.

Monday's top moves:

EXPOS: All-Star outfielder Carl Everett agreed to a contract that guarantees him $7.5 million.

"We needed to replace some of the offense we lost with Vladimir," said Expos general manager Omar Minaya, who couldn't work out a deal to re-sign Vladimir Guerrero.

Everett, 33, hit .287 last season with 28 homers and 92 RBI for the Rangers and White Sox.

Also, the Expos traded catcher Michael Barrett to Oakland for a player to be named.

CARDINALS: Free agent Jeff Suppan has reportedly agreed to a two-year, $6 million contract.

Suppan, 29 next month, went 13-11 with a 4.19 ERA for Pittsburgh and Boston last season. The right-hander has pitched at least 200 innings for five straight years.

MARINERS: Seattle reached a preliminary agreement on a three-year contract with first baseman Scott Spiezio and acquired outfielder Quinton McCracken from Arizona for infielder Greg Colbrunn.

Spiezio, 31, hit .265 with 16 homers and 83 RBI for the Angels last season.

PHILLIES: Free agent Roberto Hernandez agreed to a one-year contract, joining Billy Wagner and Tim Worrell in the team's revamped bullpen. Hernandez, 39, was 5-3 with a 4.35 ERA for the Braves last season.
