Reds e-mail Q&A

map
E-mailers want to know what's up with the Reds manager search.

Q, from Pat in St. Mary's, Ohio: What chance does Dave Miley have of being the next manager of the Reds? I thought he would get the job immediately after the interviews were over. I thought they were just a formality. Now with the decision being put off, I am concerned. I believe he proved he can do the job very well. He has put in so many years with the Reds and been a winning manager everywhere they put him. He deserves the job!

A: I'm as perplexed by this as you are, Pat. I think Miley is the man for the job. I think there's a good chance he'll still get it. The general perception is that because the process has dragged on, that it is bad news for Miley. I'm not sure that's the case. I think Reds general manager Dan O'Brien is being very deliberate because of importance of the decision.

Q, from Rodger in Western Hills: What are the chances the Reds will land free agent 2B Fernando Vina? He's not only a sorely needed leadoff hitter but a class act. I watched him interact with youngsters behind the plate last season. A perfect Cincinnati guy. If we can't pony up the cash for him, shouldn't the Reds move D'Angelo Jimenez to third to make room in the lineup for Ryan Freel? He seems like a poor man's Vina (and we know the 2004 Reds will be a poor man's team).

A: The price on Vina is likely to fall into the Reds' range. Watching Vina against the Reds, you'd think he's the ideal leadoff guy. But his on-base percentage was only .309 last year. It's dropped each of the last four years. Freel's on-base percentage was .344 last year. And Freel is a much better stolen base threat. But the Reds don't like Freel defensively at second.

Q, from Jack in Chesapeake, Va.: Could the reason this selection for the Reds new manager is taking longer than expected be because the Reds management doesn't like being upstaged by the Bengal's hiring of Marvin Lewis? Hence, Jerry Manuel might get the nod.

A: The way the Bengals are going, the Reds would be hard-pressed to upstage them with any manager hiring.
