Reds' O'Brien set for first GM meetings

By Kevin Kelly
The Cincinnati Enquirer

PHOENIX - This time around, Dan O'Brien is one of the 30.

Hired as the Reds' new general manager last month, O'Brien arrived in Arizona on Monday for the annual general manager's meetings at the Arizona Biltmore.

"The difference is, in this particular case, we are canvassing other clubs for potential ways to improve the Cincinnati Reds," said O'Brien, who is accompanied on the trip by Reds assistant GM Brad Kullman.

The meetings, which end Friday afternoon, offer a chance to initiate discussions about possible trades.

"I think quite frankly this is going to be preliminary in terms of talking with the other 29 clubs trying to see if there might be a match of some sort," O'Brien said. "To tell you the truth, it would be surprising if anything substantive came of it these five days."
