Notebook: Clemens, Pettitte latest to file for free agency

Enquirer and wire reports

NEW YORK - Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte filed for free agency Thursday, removing the two pitchers from the New York Yankees' roster.

Clemens has said he is retiring. By filing, the 41-year-old right-hander gives himself the option of negotiating with all 30 teams if he changes his mind.

Pettitte, one of the top pitchers in this year's free-agent group, has not yet started negotiations for a new contract. The Yankees repeatedly have said they hope to re-sign him and he has said it would be hard for him to imagine pitching for another team.

Also filing Thursday were Florida second baseman Luis Castillo, New York Mets infielder Jay Bell and Pittsburgh infielder Pat Meares.

REDS: The Reds got a little more leeway in reshaping their baseball operations staff Thursday when Al Goldis was named a special assistant to New York Mets general manager Jim Duquette.

Goldis has held the same title with the Reds since October of 1996.

Goldis, one of four special assistants to the Reds GM, had been given a contract extension by Jim Bowden before Bowden was fired in the club's mid-summer firesale.

WHITE SOX: Chicago exercised a $5 million option on shortstop Jose Valentin, who had filed provisionally on Oct. 27. If Chicago had declined the option, the White Sox would have had to pay a $500,000 buyout.

PADRES: San Diego will have new uniforms and a new logo when the team moves into its new downtown ballpark next spring.

The Padres unveiled a tricolor scheme of navy, sand and sky blue on Thursday. The colors are supposed to represent the sea, the sky and beaches.

The road uniforms will be a sand color and will feature a big S, D and O in San Diego.
