Ask new Reds general manager Dan O'Brien to describe what he's looking for in a field manager, and he says:
"As general parameters, I want someone with a proven record as a manager, either in the minors or major league. Foremost, I want someone who is a good teacher."
He could've been talking about interim manager Dave Miley. Miley's record of success includes 1,100-plus wins in the minor leagues and a .570 winning percentage.
Miley spent four years managing in Single-A. He won at a .614 rate.
O'Brien says he has no other candidates in mind, but the Reds did not consider naming Miley when O'Brien was introduced.
"Major League Baseball has a process you have to go through and so do the Reds," chief operating officer John Allen said.
O'Brien and Miley have never met.
"From what I've been told, he did an outstanding job," O'Brien said. "Talking to scouts who saw the ballclub, Dave did a good job under difficult circumstances."
Miley would like a shot at the job on a permanent basis.
He had not spoken to O'Brien as of Monday afternoon.
"I'm excited that I'm getting an interview," Miley said. "It all sounds very positive. I look forward to getting a chance to sit down and talk."
