Reds GM likely to be named after WS

Minaya remains top candidate

By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer

FORT LAUDERDALE - The fact the Reds did not name a general manager Monday probably means they won't do so until after the World Series.

There is one more off day in the series - Friday - but Major League Baseball frowns on making announcements between Games 5 and 6.

But a Reds source said the announcement will come shortly after the series concludes. It will end Sunday, if it goes seven games. It could end as soon as Thursday.

The Reds are deciding among three finalists - Montreal general manager Omar Minaya, Minnesota assistant GM Wayne Krivsky and Texas assistant GM Dan O'Brien.

John Allen, Reds chief operating officer, is not commenting.

But a Reds source said Minaya, Krivsky and O'Brien will be interviewed this week.

Minaya has interviewed for the vacant GM jobs in Seattle and with the New York Mets.

A Reds source said Minaya remains a candidate for the job - despite reports to the contrary.

Both the Seattle job and Mets' job would seem more attractive. The Mariners had the best record of any team not to make the playoffs. The Mets started last season with a payroll of $117 million.

Seattle is going through the interviewing process.

The Mariners have former GM Pat Gillick running things, so they aren't apt to rush the process.

The Mets reportedly want Minaya and acting GM Jim Duquette to work as co-GMs.

If the Reds were to make Minaya an offer soon, he might accept rather than wait for a call from Seattle, or take a shared title in New York.

BAD NIGHT? What bad night?

New York Yankee third baseman Aaron Boone was pretty pleased with the way things went in Game 2 of the World Series.

Boone made two errors - one that led Marlins' only run - in the Yankees' 6-1 victory over Florida Sunday night.

"Actually, it was a good night," he said. "We won. I was able to have the best at-bat I've had in a while and scratch out a hit in my last at-bat."
