Braves pitcher joins U.S. team

Enquirer staff, wire services

Atlanta Braves left-hander Horacio Ramirez was added to the U.S. roster, replacing the injured Cole Hamels of the Philadelphia Phillies. The players started practice last week, but Ramirez won't join them until Monday. Manager Frank Robinson will name his final 24-man roster Oct. 24.

The U.S. team travels to Panama City for the Olympic qualifying tournament, which begins Oct. 30.

EX-UMPIRES SUING: Eight former major-league umpires who have not regained their jobs are suing to get severance pay and health benefits, but baseball's chief labor lawyer said their mass resignation violated a contract and made them ineligible for the benefits. After submitting letters of resignation in 1999 as part of a strategy to force an early start to collective bargaining, the umpires attempted to rescind them. Baseball refused to rehire the eight.
