Notebook: Offense is absent for Red Sox vs. Athletics

The Associated Press

OAKLAND, Calif. - Things have become so desperate for Boston's loaded lineup, David Ortiz is giving Manny Ramirez hitting advice.

Ramirez, the team's most dangerous batter, is 1-for-8 with two strikeouts and has stranded seven in two playoff losses to the Oakland A's.

"I keep telling him to calm down, be patient out there," said Ortiz, who is 0-for-9 with four strikeouts hitting behind Ramirez.

Bill Mueller, the AL batting champion, is 2-for-9 with two strikeouts for Boston in the series, and Kevin Millar is 2-for-10 with three K's.

Boston stranded 13 baserunners in the opener, and seven more in Game 2. In the regular season, eight Red Sox had at least 80 RBI.

BRAVES: Second baseman Marcus Giles, hampered by a bruised thigh, took ground balls in practice and said he expects to be in the lineup tonight against the Cubs.

ORIOLES: Former Baltimore star Eddie Murray became the first to interview for the team's managerial post, which became open with the dismissal Monday of Mike Hargrove.

ASTROS: Right-hander Roy Oswalt and outfielder Jason Lane are set to have surgery next week. Oswalt will undergo groin surgery Wednesday in Philadelphia and Lane will have a hernia repaired in Massachusetts Thursday.

DOWD DONATION: John Dowd, who headed the probe that led to Pete Rose's lifetime ban, donated boxes of materials on Rose to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. The items won't go on display for several years.
