Brian Schneider hit a two-run double and six Montreal pitchers made it stand up as the Expos beat the Reds 2-1 in the season finale today.
Dernell Stenson led off the Cincinnati seventh with his third homer of the season for the Reds' only run.
A crowd of 32,322 watched the Reds close out a disappointing first season at Great American Ball Park with a 69-93 record. Major injuries and a huge shakeup in the front office and on the field helped produce the Reds' 14th season of 90 or more losses since 1900.
The Expos (83-79) matched their win total from last season while finishing fourth in the NL East.
Schneider put the Expos ahead in the second inning with his double off Scott Randall (2-5). Randall went 0-4 in his last six appearances, two of them starts.
Montreal starter Claudio Vargas pitched one-hit ball for three scoreless innings.
T.J. Tucker (2-3) pitched two innings of two-hit relief. Rocky Biddle worked the ninth for his 34th save in 41 opportunities.
Notes: Montreal SS Orlando Cabrera finished the season with 130 consecutive starts He has played in 168 consecutive games dating to last season. ... Expos OF Vladimir Guerrero went 1-for-1 with a walk before being replaced in the third inning. The All-Star slugger, who can become a free agent after the season, finished the year batting .330 with 25 home runs and 79 RBIs ...
