Q, Greg in Indianapolis: I think the biggest story of the week is not Barry Larkin, but rather what will the Reds' payroll be in 2004. The fans did their part in 2003; they sold out many games. If the team's payroll is closer to $40 million than it is to $60 million, I would consider that a slap in the face.
A: As for how good the club is next year, the payroll is key. I'd be stunned if it were $60 million, but I'd be equally stunned if it were $40 million. I think right in the middle, at $50 million, gives the Reds a chance - not a great one, but a chance.
Q, from Steve in Columbus, Ind: Am I the only cynic out there who thinks Larkin bestowing a Mercedes upon Rick Stowe is nothing but a PR gesture to show us that "it's not about the money"? A nice gesture, to be sure, but could it not have been done in the offseason in such a way so as not to guarantee media coverage?
A: Larkin could have given Stowe a Mercedes for Christmas and the media eventually would have found out about it. It was a genuine show of appreciation.
Q, from Gary in Spring Hill, Tenn.: Marty Brennaman's comment about Larkin in Tuesday's paper was one that was looking at a piece of the pie (the last piece, the last three years of Larkin's career) as compared to the whole pie (Larkin's 18 years with the Reds). It hurt me that he said such a thing. It makes me wonder if John Allen told him to say it. Can you give me John Allen's address? I have some Reds hats and souvenirs that I would like to give him, since I no longer will call myself a Reds fan.
A: I'm not sure about all the inner workings of the Reds, but I know this: Marty is unscripted. The address you're looking for is 100 Main St., Cincinnati, OH 45202. But you'll feel better about yourself if you sell that stuff on eBay.
