Grading the trades

By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer

A+ Scott Dunn for D'Angelo Jimenez with the White Sox

This deal had people wondering what the Reds were thinking. But it turned out golden. Jimenez is hitting .290. He lacks range at second base, but he makes the routine plays.

B+ Jose Guillen for Aaron Harang, Joe Valentine and Jeff Bruksch with the Oakland A's

Harang probably will be in the rotation next year. Valentine is a power arm. Guillen probably would have walked after the year, so there's really no downside.

C Scott Williamson for Phillip Dumatrait and Tyler Pelland with the Red Sox

Williamson is only 27. If he ever gets consistent, he could make this trade look bad. Dumatrait and Pelland are prospects, but they're years from the majors.

B Kent Mercker for Matt Belisle with the Atlanta Braves

Belisle has struggled out of the bullpen since joining the Reds. But he's in the majors at 23 and he may be tired. He has thrown nearly 180 innings this year.

I (incomplete) Aaron Boone for Brandon Claussen and Charlie Manning with the Yankees

If the left-handed Claussen is as good as the Reds think, this could be a great trade. The Reds shut him down because he's coming back from elbow surgery. Manning, a 24-year-old lefty, was 5-0 with a 1.19 ERA after the trade.

I Gabe White for player to be named with the Yankees

If the player to be named is named Mussina, we'll change the I to an A.

C- Scott Sullivan for Tim Hummel with the White Sox

Hummel was obtained to help the depleted Reds get through the season. He has been so-so. Sullivan's leadership has been missed.

A Paul Koronko for Phil Norton with the Chicago Cubs

None of the 15 runners Norton has inherited has scored. That's a huge stat for a middle reliever. Norton had arm surgery in 2002, so he should get better with time.
