DETROIT - Michael Cuddyer hit the first pitch of the 11th inning into the left-field seats and the Minnesota Twins beat Detroit 5-4 Friday, putting the Tigers one defeat from tying the modern record for losses.
If Detroit (41-119) loses today or Sunday against the Twins, the Tigers will tie the post-1900 record of 120 losses set by the 1962 New York Mets.
Lew Ford's double gave Minnesota a 4-3 lead in the 10th, but the Tigers, who had won three straight games, tied it on Shane Halter's RBI single.
Eddie Guardado (3-5) blew a save in the 10th but earned the win after Cuddyer's fourth homer off Franklyn German (2-4). LaTroy Hawkins pitched the 11th for his second save.
The Twins had won a season-high 11 in a row before losing to Detroit in 11 innings Thursday.
White Sox 11, Royals 2
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Jose Valentin hit a grand slam, and Frank Thomas and Carlos Lee also homered for Chicago in the rout. Jon Garland (12-13) pitched three-hit ball for eight innings, allowing only Carlos Beltran's leadoff homer in the fourth inning.
Beltran became the sixth player since 1900 to have 100 runs, 100 RBI and 30 stolen bases in three seasons. His 26th home run gave him 100 RBI and 102 runs this year.
Yankees 11, Orioles 2, 1st game; Orioles 3, Yankees 2, 10 innings, 2nd game
NEW YORK - Yankees rookie Jorge De Paula took a no-hitter into the seventh inning in his first big-league start, but New York was denied its 100th win as Baltimore rallied for a doubleheader split.
Jorge Posada hit his 30th homer to tie Yogi Berra's club record for a catcher as the Yankees won the first game. A sweep would have allowed them to clinch home-field advantage through the postseason.
Red Sox 7, Devil Rays 2
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Pedro Martinez threw three scoreless innings in his final playoff tuneup, and Manny Ramirez hit a two-run homer for Boston. With their 17th win 24 games, the Red Sox improved to 95-65 - the first time they have won that many since advancing to the World Series in 1986.
Indians 2, Blue Jays 1
TORONTO - Cleveland's Jason Stanford pitched six scoreless innings to earn his first major-league victory. Toronto's Carlos Delgado entered with a chance to become the first player to homer in five consecutive at-bats, but he finished 0-for-4.
Mariners 9, Athletics 3
SEATTLE - Joel Pineiro beat AL West champion Oakland for the fourth time this season and Mike Cameron homered for Seattle.
Pineiro (16-11) improved his career record against the A's to 6-1, including 4-0 in 2003.
The Mariners got three hits each from Ichiro Suzuki and Randy Winn. Cameron drove in three runs.
The A's had a four-game winning streak snapped. Oakland will face Boston in the first round of the playoffs.
Pineiro pitched six innings and allowed three runs - one earned - and six hits. Julio Mateo pitched three innings for his first major league save.
Michael Wood (2-1) lost in his first career start.
Angels 5, Rangers 3
ANAHEIM, Calif. - Tim Salmon hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the eighth inning and Garret Anderson got his 200th hit of the season as Anaheim beat Texas.
Derrick Turnbow (2-0) pitched two perfect innings after relieving starter Aaron Sele, and Francisco Rodriguez got three outs for his second save. Troy Percival is sidelined for the season-ending series because of tendinitis in his right forearm.
Rafael Palmeiro hit his 38th homer and the 528th of his career.
Ron Mahay (3-3) took the loss.
