NL: Braves' Ortiz notches 20th win of season

The Associated Press

ATLANTA - Russ Ortiz won his 20th game in style, pitching a three-hitter and driving in the only run as the Atlanta Braves defeated Florida 1-0 Friday night to bump the Marlins out of the lead in the NL wild-card race.

The Philadelphia Phillies moved a half-game ahead of Florida with a 7-3 victory over Cincinnati.

Ortiz (20-7) reached 20 wins for the first time in his career and gave Atlanta its first 20-game winner since Tom Glavine in 2000. It was Ortiz' second career shutout.

Ortiz pitched his first complete game this season, allowing a pair of singles and keeping the Marlins from getting anyone past first base.

Ortiz accounted for the only run of the game, singling home Javy Lopez in the second inning.

Astros 8, Cardinals 1

ST. LOUIS - Roy Oswalt dominated for seven innings and Houston got home runs from Jeff Bagwell and Richard Hidalgo. The Astros have won six of their last seven games and are a season-best 15 games above .500.

Houston leads second-place Chicago by 1 1/2 games in the NL Central. St. Louis is nearly out of the race, trailing by six games with seven to play.

Cubs 10, Pirates 9, 1st game

Pirates 10, Cubs 6, 2nd game

PITTSBURGH - Craig Wilson and Rob Mackowiak drove in two runs each as Pittsburgh won the second game of a doubleheader.

Jason Bay homered twice and drove in eight runs - one short of Pittsburgh's club record - in the first game, but Chicago won despite blowing a five-run lead. Alex Gonzalez, slumping since the All-Star break, homered and drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth with a sacrifice fly for the Cubs.

Diamondbacks 3, Brewers 2

MILWAUKEE - Randy Johnson hit his first major-league home run, and Steve Finley's solo shot broke a ninth-inning tie for Arizona. Johnson had gone 436 at-bats without a homer until lining a 385-foot solo shot off Doug Davis in the third inning.

Matt Kata also homered for the Diamondbacks. Eddie Perez went deep for Milwaukee.

Rockies 6, Padres 5

DENVER - Scott Elarton won for the first time in six starts since June 8, and Juan Uribe and Pablo Osuna drove in two runs each to lead Colorado. Elarton (4-4) was sent to the minor leagues on June 27 and was recalled Sept. 5.

Expos 7, Mets 1

NEW YORK - Jose Vidro hit a grand slam and a solo home for Montreal, which sent New York to its sixth straight loss and 14th in 15 games. The Expos earned a rare road win, improving to 8-24 on the road since the beginning of July.

Giants 6, Dodgers 4

LOS ANGELES - Barry Bonds hit his 657th homer - three shy of Willie Mays - and the NL West champions dropped the Dodgers three games behind Philadelphia for the NL wild-card spot.

Bonds' fourth homer in his last six games was his 44th this year, tying Alex Rodriguez for the major league lead.

Dustin Hermanson (3-3) gave up three runs and seven hits in five innings. Tim Worrell, the Giants' sixth pitcher, got three outs for his 36h save.

Kevin Brown (14-9) gave up five runs - three earned - and seven hits in five innings.
