Ashby shelved until 2005

The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - Dodgers right-hander Andy Ashby will have elbow ligament replacement surgery and won't return until 2005.

Ashby is 3-10 with a 5.18 ERA in 12 starts and nine relief appearances this season. He has lost six of his last seven starts.

He will have surgery during the week after the regular season ends Sept. 28, Los Angeles manager Jim Tracy said Tuesday.

"He's looking at returning in 2005, if he pitches again," Tracy said.

PHILLIES: Philadelphia right-hander Terry Adams might need season-ending surgery on his ailing right elbow.

Adams had X-rays and an MRI on the elbow Tuesday, and team doctor Michael Ciccotti recommended arthroscopic surgery to repair the "loose bodies" that were found. Adams will get a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews next week.

Adams has been on the 15-day disabled list since Aug. 27 because of a strained left oblique muscle.

He is 1-4 with a 2.65 ERA in a team-high 66 games.

ROCKIES: Colorado activated right-hander Chin-hui Tsao from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, in time for him to start against the Houston Astros.

Tsao, the first Taiwanese-born pitcher in the majors, had been sidelined since Aug. 23 with a strained hamstring.
