AL: Boston's bats pound D-Rays

The Associated Press

BOSTON - Derek Lowe won his fifth straight decision, and Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz homered in another Boston slugging display as the Red Sox beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 8-2 Monday night.

Ramirez and Ortiz also doubled for Boston, which has 605 extra-base hits, two short of the major league record Seattle set in 1996.

Lowe (16-6) started with 4 2/3 hitless innings against the team he no-hit on April 27 last year in Fenway Park. Lowe allowed four hits in eight innings. He got 17 outs on grounders, six on strikeouts and one on a fly ball.

Boston stopped a two-game losing streak and held on to the AL wild-card lead. The Red Sox now lead Seattle by 1 1/2 games, and trail New York by 5 1/2 games in the AL East.

Twins 13, Indians 6

CLEVELAND - Torii Hunter tied his career high with five RBI as Minnesota took sole possession of the AL Central lead for the first time since June 30.

Hunter, Michael Ryan and Cristian Guzman each drove in two runs during an eight-run sixth inning. Hunter added a three-run homer in the ninth for his 99th RBI.

Minnesota (81-69) moved a half-game ahead of idle Chicago (80-69).

Yankees 13, Orioles 1

BALTIMORE - Alfonso Soriano went 4-for-5 with two home runs, and Aaron Boone also connected twice to lead a six-homer attack that carried the New York.

Soriano set the tone by driving the first pitch of the game into the left-field seats, and New York took control by scoring five runs in a span of five pitches against Rodrigo Lopez (7-10) during a six-run fourth.

Royals 10, Tigers 4

DETROIT - The Detroit Tigers became the first AL team to lose 111 games since the 1939 St. Louis Browns, as Joe Randa drove in five runs for Kansas City.

Randa tied a career high for RBI. He hit a three-run homer in the ninth and Aaron Guiel homered later in the inning.

Rangers 6, Mariners 4

ARLINGTON, Texas - Rafael Palmeiro and Mark Teixeira homered as Texas ended a five-game losing streak and dropped Seattle farther back in the AL wild-card race.

Palmeiro's shot made him just the second player in major league history to reach 35 homers and 100 RBI in nine straight seasons. Hall of Famer Jimmie Foxx is the only other player to do it.
