AL: Chicago wins, stays tied in AL Central

The Associated Press

BOSTON - Bartolo Colon pitched his third consecutive complete game and Carlos Lee was 3-for-4 with a home run Saturday night as the Chicago White Sox beat the Boston Red Sox 3-1 to retain a share of the AL Central lead.

Colon (14-12) allowed just an unearned run on five hits and two walks, striking out two to snap Chicago's three-game losing streak and earn his eighth complete game of the season. The win kept the White Sox tied atop the division with Minnesota.

Johnny Damon had three singles for Boston, which entered the night 1 1/2 games ahead of Seattle in the AL wild-card race.

Yankees 6, Devil Rays 5, 1st game; Yankees 6, Devil Rays 3, 2nd game

NEW YORK - Bernie Williams homered twice in a game for the first time in more than a year and Ruben Sierra added a go-ahead homer in the opener of a day-night doubleheader. Sierra then drove in three runs in the second game to complete the sweep.

With the wins, New York opened a 5 1/2-game lead over the second-place Red Sox in the AL East.

Blue Jays 6, Orioles 1

TORONTO - Greg Myers became the second catcher in Blue Jays history to hit an inside-the-park home run, and Toronto won its fourth straight game.

Kelvim Escobar (11-9) won for just the second time in his last six starts and allowed one run on five hits, while walking a season-high six and striking out two in six innings.

Twins 2, Indians 0

CLEVELAND - Kyle Lohse pitched 7 1/3 shutout innings and Cristian Guzman homered for the first time in more than a year Saturday night as Minnesota stayed in step atop the AL Central.

Lohse (13-11) allowed six hits and matched a career high with nine strikeouts for the Twins.

Royals 7, Tigers 0

DETROIT - Jamey Wright threw a seven-hit shutout to win for the first time in almost a year and Carlos Beltran drove in three runs to lead Kansas City.

The Tigers need to win five of their final 15 games to avoid tying the 1962 New York Mets for the most losses in a season since 1900.

Athletics 9, Rangers 3

ARLINGTON, Texas - Erubiel Durazo hit two home runs and Jose Guillen also homered as Oakland won its fifth straight.

Oakland starter Tim Hudson (15-6) gave up three runs and six hits over the first two innings but still managed a win.

Mariners 5, Angels 1

SEATTLE - Randy Winn hit his second grand slam of the season and Freddy Garcia threw eight shutout innings.

The Mariners moved within a half-game of Boston for the AL wild card after the Red Sox lost to Chicago. Seattle won its fourth straight to keep up with Oakland, remaining 21/2 games behind the Athletics in the AL West.

After Edgar Martinez hit a tiebreaking single, Winn's slam off Francisco Rodriguez (7-3) touched off a celebration at Safeco Field.

Garcia (12-14) allowed six hits with five strikeouts and three walks.
