Reds chatter

No perfect 10

Chris Reitsma entered Saturday as the Reds' leader with nine victories.

Reitsma, who has moved into the Reds' closer role, is the only active pitcher on the team with more than three victories.

Should Reitsma fail to win a 10th game, it would be the first time since 1900 that the Reds' victory leader would not have double-digit victories. Only three times in that period has the leader had as few as 10 victories - 2001, when Elmer Dessens won 10; 1987, when Ted Power, Bill Gullickson and Tom Browning each won 10; and 1933, when Benton Lucas won 10.

Here's a look at recent Reds victory leaders:

Year Pitcher Wins
1994 John Smiley 11
1995 Pete Schourek 18
1996 John Smiley 13
1997 Dave Burba,

Brett Tomko

11
1998 Pete Harnisch 14
1999 Pete Harnisch 16
2000 Steve Parris 12
2001 Dessens 10
2002 Jimmy Haynes 15

Avoiding the worst

The Reds' come-from-behind victory in Thursday's otherwise meaningless game against the Pirates assured one thing - the home team won't lose 100 games for only the second time in franchise history.

However, the Reds seem destined for their third 90-plus loss season since the 101-loss debacle of 1982.

Here's a look at the team's record since that fateful '82 season:

Year W-L Finish
1983 74-88 Sixth
1984 70-92 Fifth
1985 89-72 Second
1986 86-76 Second
1987 84-78 Second
1988 87-74 Second
1989 75-87 Fifth
1990 91-71 First
1991 74-88 Fifth
1992 90-72 Second
1993 73-89 Fifth
1994 66-48 First
1995 85-59 First
1996 81-81 Third
1997 76-86 Third
1998 77-85 Fourth
1999 96-67 Second
2000 85-77 Second
2001 66-96 Fifth
2002 78-84 Third

Remember them?

Reliever Felix Heredia has become the most valuable of the Cincinnati Yankees. Third baseman Aaron Boone has hit well of late, raising his average to .236 in 148 at-bats in New York, while reliever Gabe White is 2-0 with a 3.86 ERA in nine games.

Heredia allowed a run Saturday, but has a 1.93 ERA in seven games and has moved into the top left-handed reliever spot ahead of closer Mariano Rivera.

By the numbers

3: Consecutive seasons the Reds broke the club record for batters striking out.

2: Players from Opening Day who have spent the entire season on the active roster, Sean Casey and Jason LaRue.

123: Different lineups used by the Reds this season.

24: Consecutive games with a different lineup, entering Friday.

The week ahead

Monday, at Pittsburgh, 7:05 p.m.

Tuesday, at Pittsburgh, 7:05 p.m.

Wednesday, at Pittsburgh, 7:05 p.m.

Thursday, at Pittsburgh, 7:05 p.m.

Friday, at Philadelphia, 7:05 p.m.

Saturday, at Philadelphia, 7:05 p.m.

Sunday, at Philadelphia, 1:35 p.m.

The skinny: The Reds can still factor into the postseason races with three games against the Phillies and three more against the Cubs (Sept. 23-25).
