Reds manager Dave Miley said before Tuesday's game that what separates the frightfully young Reds from other teams is opponents' ability to hit the home run.
Miley's Reds found a little power of their own Tuesday night in a 10-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates before a crowd of 21,241 at Great American Ball Park.
The Reds were powered by two-run homers by Jason LaRue and Wily Mo Pena, sandwiched around a three-run shot from Russell Branyan.
"We've been talking about it for the last couple of days," Miley said. "Those were big blows for us."
The Reds snapped a three-game losing streak and won for only the fourth time in 16 games. They also broke a seven-game string of losses to the Pirates in Cincinnati.
"That's a nice win for us to come back like that," said Sean Casey, who had three hits and just missed a home run.
The Reds rallied from a 6-2 deficit.
Josh Hall, just called up from Double-A, started and allowed six runs over 4 1/3 innings.
"You have good nights and bad nights," Hall said. "Tonight was a bad one. I left everything up."
Craig Wilson's third home run in two nights gave the Pirates a 2-0 lead in the second.
They added two more in the third, but LaRue cut the lead in half with a two-run home run in the fifth. It was LaRue's 16th of the year.
Hall gave up back-to-back hits to start the fifth, and Juan Cerros was brought in.
The first batters to face him reached base, making it 6-2.
The Reds have been averaging 3.1 runs a game over their last 33 games, so a four-run lead looked safe for Pittsburgh.
That is, until Branyan hit a three-run homer into the Reds' bullpen in the sixth.
LaRue followed with a double. Pena then went the opposite way and hit one out to right-center for his third of the year.
Juan Castro's RBI led to an 8-6 lead for the Reds, who recorded a season-high seven hits in the inning.
"That's the way hitting is," Casey said. "A couple of guys get hits and you get on a roll. It was good to get six like that. We've been puttering along for a while now."
Matt Belisle, who pitched a scoreless sixth in his second big-league outing, earned his first win.
