NL: Giants maintain NL West lead

The Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO - Marquis Grissom drew a bases-loaded walk from Matt Mantei in the 11th inning to give the San Francisco Giants their sixth victory in seven games, 5-4 over the Arizona Diamondbacks Saturday.

Edgardo Alfonzo led off the 11th with a single off Mantei (5-4), who had issued just 14 walks all season. Yorvit Torrealba and J.T. Snow walked to load the bases with two outs.

Mantei's 3-1 pitch to Grissom wasn't very close, scoring pinch runner Cody Ransom.

It was the Giants' 22nd victory this season in their final at-bat. They maintained their 12-game NL West lead by beating Arizona for the 22nd time in their last 29 meetings.

Scott Eyre (2-1) got two outs for the victory.

Steve Finley had four hits, Luis Gonzalez drove in three runs and Raul Mondesi homered for the Diamondbacks, who lost for the 10th time in 11 games at Pacific Bell Park.

Barry Bonds got three more walks from the Diamondbacks. Two were intentional, including a free pass with none on in the eighth.

Cubs 8, Brewers 4

MILWAUKEE - Randall Simon hit a two-run homer and turned boos into cheers in his return to Miller Park, leading Chicago past Milwaukee.

Mark Prior (15-5) struck out seven in seven innings, becoming the first Chicago pitcher to win seven straight decisions since Kevin Tapani in 1998. Prior allowed three runs and 10 hits.

Troy O'Leary had four RBI for Chicago, which opened a 5-0 lead in the third and won for the sixth time in seven games.

Phillies 9, Mets 6

PHILADELPHIA - Ricky Ledee hit a tiebreaking three-run double, and Marlon Byrd and Bobby Abreu hit solo homers, leading Philadelphia to the win.

The Phillies have won eight of nine after losing six straight and hold a one-game lead over the Florida Marlins in the NL wild-card race.

Marlins 14, Expos 4

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Florida beat up on Tomo Ohka for nine runs in the first two innings, and Brad Penny cruised in the win.

Ohka (8-12) faced 19 batters in the first two innings, giving up six hits and nine runs - four earned.

Dodgers 10, Rockies 2

DENVER - Shawn Green drove in five runs, Ron Coomer homered twice and Odalis Perez pitched six strong innings as Los Angeles beat Colorado.

Green homered in the first inning and added a three-run double in the fifth to give Los Angeles its seventh win in eight games.

Braves 9, Pirates 2

ATLANTA - Greg Maddux pitched into the eighth inning and moved within one victory of becoming the first major-leaguer to win at least 15 games in 16 consecutive seasons as Atlanta beat Pittsburgh.

Maddux (14-10) is currently tied with Cy Young, the only other pitcher to have achieved the feat.

He allowed eight hits, two runs - none earned - in 7 1/3 innings. He struck out five and didn't walk a batter in winning his 287th game, tying him with Bert Blyleven for 24th on the career list.
