MLB power rankings

The Cincinnati Enquirer

This week we'll take a look at teams' chances for the postseason. Seventeen clubs have at least a glimmer of hope:

Off-the-board locks

Atlanta: Probably the best team in baseball.

San Francisco: Solid pitching and defense, along with Bonds, make the Giants a postseason force.

6-5 favorites

New York Yankees: The best team money can buy went into Saturday with a 2 1/2-game lead.

Oakland: The A's saved their best ball for late in the season again.

Even money

Boston: A very talented club with a crisis a day.

Seattle: Maybe should've made a move at the deadline.

Philadelphia: Held off the Marlins and survived Bowa.

3-2 shots

Houston: Getting Oswalt back is huge.

Minnesota: Hung in there, poised for a move.

2-1 shots

Chicago Cubs: Great series against St. Louis. But they are the Cubs.

Florida: Willis has to find it again for the Fish to win.

Chicago White Sox: Talent is there. Big Hurt is back.

3-1 shots

Kansas City: Has played well against the division.

St. Louis: Bullpen is weak, not good for a stretch run.

5-1 shots

Los Angeles: Just not enough offense.

Arizona: Would have thought the D'backs would have made a run by now.

Montreal: Vlad was NL's best in August.
