Reds chatter

By Mike Ball
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Know your Reds

Even the most ardent fans have had trouble keeping track of the Reds' player moves the past six weeks. Here's a little quiz to test your knowledge of some of the newest Reds:

I was drafted by the Cardinals in 1994 but opted to attend Jefferson Davis (Ala.) Junior College and played one season at Southern Mississippi. My brother-in-law is NHL Tampa Bay Lightning star Vincent Lecavalier.

I played college ball at Old Dominion, where I hit .388 for my career and was an All-American. I played at Triple-A in 2002 and this season, before making my major-league debut with the Reds. My brother Daniel is a catcher in the Cardinals' system.

I was signed by the Yankees and suffered a life-threatening injury in my native Dominican Republic when my car collided with a bus in 2000.

I signed with the Reds as a catcher and played seven seasons in the minor leagues.

I was drafted by the Twins in 1992, and the Reds are the fifth major-league team I have pitched for. I pitched for the China Trust Whales in the Chinese Professional Baseball League in 2002.

I am one of only three Pacific 10 players - along with Mark McGwire and Troy Glaus - to hit 30 home runs in a season.

(Answers below)

Remember him?

The bad news is Dmitri Young entered Saturday on a Tigers team that already had lost 103 games. The good news is, he's their best player.

Young leads the Tigers in batting average (.294), runs (70), doubles (27), homers (28), RBI (78), on-base percentage (.369) and slugging percentage (.553).

His totals in runs, doubles, homers and RBI would lead the Reds, as well.

By the numbers

5.05: Reds' team ERA entering Saturday, flirting with the worst in franchise history (5.08, 1930).

.211: Winning percentage of Danny Graves (4-15), third lowest ever by a Reds pitcher with at least 15 decisions - Kent Peterson, .118, 2-15, 1948; Ewell Blackwell, .200, 3-12, 1952.

5: Native Hawaiians to have played for the Reds, once catcher Dane Sardinha plays. (The others: Pitcher Doug Capilla, pitcher Steve Cooke, outfielder Mike Lum and pitcher Milt Wilcox).

19: Players who have been placed on the disabled list, for a total of 25 times.

.462: Batting average of Wily Mo Pena on the road trip, entering Saturday (.462, 6-for-13, 2HR, 4 RBI, 4 R).

70: Times Reds batters have been hit by pitch, a club record.

Quiz answers

1. Pitcher John Bale

2. Infielder Tim Hummel

3. Infielder D'Angelo Jimenez

4. Manager Dave Miley

5. Pitcher Dan Serafini

6. Outfielder Eric Valent
