AL Games: Sosa shuts down Mariners

The Associated Press

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Jorge Sosa pitched a four-hitter and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays defeated the Seattle Mariners 1-0 Thursday night. The Devil Rays posted consecutive complete-game shutouts for the first time in their six-year history.

Damian Rolls' RBI double accounted for the run. Ryan Franklin lost despite pitching a six-hitter.

The loss dropped Seattle one-half game behind Boston in the AL wild-card race. The Mariners are two games back of AL West-leading Oakland.

Sosa (5-9) struck out six and walked two in his first complete game in 29 career starts. He fanned Bret Boone three times.

Orioles 7, Athletics 5

BALTIMORE - Brian Roberts and Larry Bigbie had two RBI apiece, and Baltimore sent Oakland to its second straight loss.

Yankees 3, Blue Jays 2

TORONTO - Karim Garcia hit a go-ahead double in the eighth inning to extend New York's lead over Boston in the AL East to 3 1/2 games.

Tigers 2, Indians 1

DETROIT - Gary Knotts (3-5) got his first major league win since May 24, allowing one run and six hits in 6 2/3 innings.
