Count 'em. That's 53 players, 28 of whom are pitchers, both club records for players used in a season.

The 53 players are most in the majors. Ten Reds have made their big-league debuts - Budzinski, Chamblee, Hall, Hummel, Olmedo, Randall, Smitherman, Stenson, Valentine and Wagner.

The rookie

Ryan Wagner, the 14th overall pick in the June amateur draft, is the team's first No. 1 pick to make his major-league debut the season he was chosen.

He not only has made the team but has become one of the Reds' best pitchers.

Wagner entered Saturday with a 2-0 record and 1.71 ERA in 16 games.

He is the first No. 1 to make the Reds since Kearns, No. 1 in 1998. The other picks:

2002: Chris Gruler - out for the season with a shoulder injury.
2001: Jeremy Sowers - did not sign.
2000: David Espinosa - traded to Detroit for pitcher Brian Moehler.
1999: Ty Howington - left-handed pitcher is 0-2 with a 6.91 ERA at Chattanooga.

By the numbers

9: Former Reds currently with contenders - Aaron Boone (Yankees), Felix Heredia (Yankees), Kent Mercker (Braves), Jose Guillen (Athletics), Scott Sullivan (White Sox), Gabe White (Yankees), Scott Williamson (Red Sox), Frank Robinson (Expos), Jack McKeon (Marlins).

0: Current Reds playing for contenders.
