Brewers 4, Reds 3, 10 innings

Reds fall into last-place tie

The Associated Press

The Reds look determined to finish in last place while the Milwaukee Brewers look determined not to.

The Reds fell into a last-place tie with the Brewers today with a 4-3 loss in 10 innings at Great American Ball Park. It was the Reds' fifth-straight loss and the Brewers' 10th-straight win.

"They're playing as well as anybody in baseball," Reds interim manager Dave Miley said. "They've done a nice job getting into the direction they're heading."

But Milwaukee got bit by the injury bug that has plagued the Reds this season when Geoff Jenkins, who homered in his fourth consecutive game, broke his left thumb after banging it on Jason LaRue's shinguard while being tagged out to end the seventh inning.

Jenkins is probably out for the season.

"It's frustrating to me," said Jenkins, who missed the second half of last season with a dislocated right ankle. "... Not only were we putting together a win streak - and I was having my best time ever in Milwaukee ... I don't think I've ever had more of a high and a low," he said.

Jenkins was 9-for-16 with seven RBI in the series, leading the Brewers to their first sweep of a four-game series with the Reds.

The Brewers' winning streak is their longest since joining the National League in 1998 - the last time they won more than 10 in a row was during their club-record 13-game run in 1987.

Bill Hall's two-run homer in the 10th inning off Chris Reitsma (9-4) was the difference in today's game.

The Reds scored one run in the 10th on Hall's two-out error at second base, but Dan Kolb retired Jason LaRue with the bases loaded for his 13th save in 14 tries. Kolb has converted 13 consecutive opportunities.

Eddie Perez opened the top of the 10th with a double off Reitsma. After Royce Clayton grounded out, Hall homered to left for his third of the season and second in the series.

Valerio De Los Santos (3-3) pitched two scoreless innings for the win.

Milwaukee starter Wes Obermueller, acquired July 2 from Kansas City, took a lead into the seventh but was denied his first win in nine career major league appearances, including eight starts.

Ryan Freel led off the first inning for the Reds by getting on base and scoring for the fourth consecutive game. He started today with a double and scored on D'Angelo Jimenez's double.

Jenkins tied it with a two-out homer in the third, his 28th. He tied Jeromy Burnitz's club record for consecutive games with at least one home run since Milwaukee moved to the NL in 1998. The overall team mark is five, also set by Burnitz in 1997.

Milwaukee capitalized on third baseman Russell Branyan's error to take a 2-1 lead in the fifth. Branyan, who was activated from the disabled list before the game after being sidelined since Aug. 13 with a sprained right ankle, mishandled Keith Ginter's grounder.

The Brewers followed with three consecutive singles, and John Vander Wal drove in Ginter with the go-ahead run.

The Reds took advantage of a Milwaukee error to tie it in the seventh. Dernell Stenson led off with a single, and Luis Vizcaino relieved Obermueller.

LaRue laid down a sacrifice bunt, but second baseman Ginter took his eye off first baseman Richie Sexson's throw, and it sailed into foul territory down the right-field line, allowing Stenson to score and LaRue to move to third.

After Ruben Mateo struck out, Freel flied out to right field, and Vander Wal threw LaRue out at the plate for a double play.

Notes: The Reds optioned C Corky Miller to Triple-A Louisville to make room on the roster for Branyan ... Milwaukee manager Ned Yost and the Brewers coaches wore outfits made famous by waitresses at the Hooters restaurant chain - midriff-revealing T-shirts and orange hot pants - on their trip to Chicago. Yost and the coaches had promised to do that if the team won 10 consecutive games.
