Notes: Hummel makes his Reds debut

Sullivan trade provides club with versatility

Less than one week after trading relief pitcher Scott Sullivan to the White Sox, the Reds realized their return Tuesday.

Infielder Tim Hummel's arrival in Cincinnati completed the Sullivan deal. Hummel was the "player to be named" in the trade.

Hummel, who batted .284 with 15 homers and 80 RBI in 128 games for Triple-A Charlotte this season, made his major-league debut as a pinch hitter in the sixth inning.

"It didn't even sink in when I was in the dugout," said Hummel, who grounded out to third but became the 52nd player used by the Reds this season, a club record. "It kind of took a few pitches. It just doesn't sink in. It seems so surreal."

The Reds could use Hummel, a second-round pick in the 2000 draft, at any one of three positions.

He made 97 appearances at third base, 31 at shortstop and six at second base this season.

"I think he's a guy that gives us flexibility in that he can play those three positions," assistant general manager Brad Kullman said. "Depending on how things shake out, he could be in the big-league picture next year.

"He's a guy who is going to get a good look the rest of the way. I think he's a guy who will fit in really well."

SHOW TIME: It took nine years and 226 minor-league games, but Scott Randall made his major-league debut Tuesday.

The Reds recalled the 27-year-old pitcher from Triple-A Louisville. He worked a scoreless sixth inning.

"I didn't walk anyone, that was the main goal," Randall said. "I'm happy with it. It's all you can really expect to do. They put the ball in play and they made the plays. I'll take it."

The right-hander, who earlier this season had an 18-game winning streak snapped, was 10-4 with a 4.63 ERA and three saves in 30 games for the Bats.

GLAD TO BE HERE: Like many in the Reds clubhouse nowadays, pitcher Phil Norton sees a chance with a rebuilding team.

The Reds traded a minor-league pitcher to the Cubs Monday for the reliever.

Twenty months removed from reconstructive elbow surgery, Norton was 4-2 with a 3.78 ERA and one save in 38 games at Triple-A this season.

"I'm very pleased to be here," said Norton, who pitched the seventh inning and allowed three runs on two hits. "Me and another player were talking (Monday) and he was saying, 'If you get a chance this offseason, make sure you talk to the Reds. They're going with kind of a youth movement.'

"After the game we were talking about it and he was like, 'I told you.' "

SURGERY SCHEDULED: Third baseman Brandon Larson said he probably would undergo surgery Monday to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder.

"After a week of rehabbing down here on the DL, it was basically still pretty bad," Larson said. "It's been a weird year. But I should be 100 percent (by spring training)."

ODDS AND ENDS: Outfielder Reggie Taylor (dislocated left shoulder) was placed on the 60-day DL. ... Relief pitcher Mark Watson (kidney ailment) was placed on the 15-day DL. ... Pitcher Joe Valentine was optioned to Louisville and infielder Jim Chamblee was designated for assignment before Tuesday's game. ... Utility player Russell Branyan went 1-for-4 in the first game of his rehabilitation assignment at Louisville on Monday. He could return to the Reds by Thursday.
