Brewers 7, Reds 1

Lowly Reds suffer 3rd defeat in a row; prove no match for 'power-laden' Milwaukee

On New Guy Night at Great American Ball Park, the reinforcements didn't raise the Reds' talent level anywhere near the level of the Milwaukee Brewers. Danny Serafini, one of four players making their Cincinnati debuts Tuesday, gave up a pair of two-run homers and the loss as the Reds fell to the Milwaukee Brewers 7-1 before 18,787.

The Brewers have won eight straight; the Reds have lost three straight.

"They have some guys who put the ball in the seats," Reds manager Dave Miley said. "That's the difference between the offenses."

The Reds' starting eight Tuesday had a total of 24 home runs. The Brewers had a total of 116.

When the Milwaukee Brewers have you severely outmanned, you know you're in trouble. But the Reds, because of injuries and trades, are looking for warm bodies.

Relievers Scott Randall and Phil Norton and infielder Tim Hummel also made their debuts. That pushed the number of pitchers used this year to 27, a club record, and the number of players used to 53, also a record.

Randall and Hummel were making their major-league debuts - the ninth and 10th players to do so for the Reds this year.

Randall, called up from Triple-A Louisville, pitched a scoreless sixth.

Hummel, the player-to-be-named in the Scott Sullivan trade, grounded out.

Of those making their debuts, Norton, whom the Reds got in a trade with the Cubs for minor-leaguer John Koronka on Monday, fared the worst. He did not retire a batter. He allowed two hits and a walk, and all three runners scored to turn the game into a rout.

Serafini was 10-2 with a 1.59 ERA in the Mexican League. But he was 14-13 with a 6.06 ERA in parts of five seasons in the majors. Tuesday's appearance was his first in the majors since 2000.

"It's great to be back," said Serafini, who gave up a pair of hits in the first but got out of it with a double play.

Geoff Jenkins hit a two-run homer in the third.
