PHOENIX - Pitcher Scott Sullivan was shipped by the Reds to the Chicago White Sox Thursday for a player to be announced.
The Reds also sent cash to the White Sox in the deal.
Sullivan, a 32-year-old right-hander, was second only to shortstop Barry Larkin in service time with the Reds.
Sullivan and the team parted on good terms. Assistant general manager Brad Kullman delayed the trade until after the birth of Sullivan's third child, Lily Ann, on Monday.
"I appreciate the front office being honest and forthright," Sullivan said.
Sullivan was 6-0 with a 3.62 ERA with the Reds this year. He made five appearances, allowing one run, since being reinstated from the disabled list on Aug. 6.
The Reds were able to trade Sullivan after the July 31 deadline because he passed through waivers.
Sullivan was drafted by the Reds in the second round in 1993, and he made it to the big leagues in 1995. He led the majors in relief innings four straight years (1998-2001).
In 2001, Sullivan was 7-1 with a 3.31 ERA and earned the Johnny Vander Meer Award as the team's outstanding pitcher.
"I have mixed emotions," he said. "The Reds are the only team I've even known.
"But I'm excited to be in the pennant race. All I've ever wanted to do was win."
Sullivan is a free agent after this year. There is a possibility he could return to the Reds.
"We've made a lot of contacts in the Cincinnati," he said. "The people have been great to me."
