KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Mike Mussina pitched eight shutout innings and Jorge Posada went 4-for-5 as the New York Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals 6-0 Tuesday night.
A day after the Yankees gave up 11 doubles and fell 12-9 to Kansas City for their third straight loss, the AL East leaders won with outstanding pitching.
Mussina (13-6) gave up four hits, striking out five and walking four and was replaced by Mariano Rivera starting the ninth inning.
Mussina's only shaky inning was the first, when the Royals loaded the bases with two out on Raul Ibanez's single and two walks.
But Mussina, raising his career record against Kansas City to 13-6 and his Kauffman Stadium mark to 7-1, got Desi Relaford on a called third strike.
Mariners 3, Blue Jays 1
SEATTLE - Freddy Garcia snapped a career-worst six-game losing streak, outpitching Roy Halladay.
Edgar Martinez's RBI double put Seattle ahead for good.
Garcia (10-12) won for the first time in eight starts since beating Anaheim 6-4 on June 24. He gave up four hits and five walks in 6 1/3 innings, striking out four.
Indians 9, Twins 6
MINNEAPOLIS - Ryan Ludwick hit two home runs and Cleveland ended Minnesota's four-game winning streak.
Ludwick, Angel Santos and Casey Blake all homered during a four-run seventh inning that put the Indians ahead 8-4.
Tigers 7, Rangers 4
ARLINGTON, Texas - Jeremy Bonderman pitched seven solid innings and Brandon Inge had three RBI as Detroit spoiled the major-league debut of Texas' Juan Dominguez. Carlos Pena and Craig Monroe hit consecutive homers in the fifth, helping Detroit win for the sixth time in 20 games.
Devil Rays 4, Orioles 2
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Rob Bell took a one-hitter into the eighth inning, and Damian Rolls hit a two-run double to lead Tampa Bay.
Carl Crawford and Rocco Baldelli each added a run-scoring single for the Devil Rays.
Athletics 5, Red Sox 3
OAKLAND, Calif. - Barry Zito finally got a little good fortune, and the Oakland Athletics finally pushed ahead of Boston in the AL wild-card race.
Zito pitched into the sixth inning for his first win since July 3, and Eric Chavez and Terrence Long homered during Oakland's five-run first.
Zito (9-10) ended his five-game losing streak, allowing six hits and three runs while laboring through 101 pitches in just 5 1/3 innings.
White Sox 10, Angels 4
ANAHEIM, Calif. - Dan Wright, winless in 12 starts this season, earned a victory in his second appearance out of the bullpen and Chicago beat Anaheim.
Magglio Ordonez, Sandy Alomar Jr. and Carlos Lee drove in two runs apiece for the White Sox, who moved within a half-game of first-place Kansas City in the AL Central.
Wright (1-5) got out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the fourth and went 4 2-3 innings, allowing a run and two hits.
Ramon Ortiz (13-10) was charged with six runs - five earned - and eight hits over 3 1-3 innings. He has lost consecutive starts for the first time since May 10.
