As the Reds turn
The Reds have had arguably the most tumultuous stretch in recent history:
Monday, July 28: General manager Jim Bowden, manager Bob Boone, hitting coach Tom Robson and third-base coach Tim Foli were relieved of their duties. Dave Miley was named manager, and Leland Maddox and Brad Kullman were named acting co-general managers.
Tuesday, July 29: Closer Scott Williamson was traded to the Boston Red Sox for minor-league pitcher Phillip Dumatrait, a player to be named and $1 million.
Wednesday, July 30: Outfielder Jose Guillen was traded to the Athletics for pitchers Aaron Harang, Joe Valentine and Jeff Bruksch; the contract of John Bale was purchased; and outfielder Wily Mo Pena returned to the major-league roster following a rehabilitation stint.
Thursday, July 31: Third baseman Aaron Boone was traded to the Yankees for pitchers Brandon Claussen and Charlie Manning and $1.25 million; reliever Gabe White was sent to the Yankees for a player to be named and $400,000; pitcher Ryan Dempster was placed on the disabled list; and infielder Ryan Freel was recalled from Triple-A Louisville.
Saturday, August 2: Pitcher Josh Hall came up from Double-A Chattanooga.
Sunday, August 3: The contract of outfielder Mark Budzinski was purchased from Louisville; Hall was optioned to Chattanooga. The team took out a two-page advertisement in the Enquirer explaining its "plan."
Monday, August 4: Pitcher Jimmy Haynes went on the disabled list; Ken Griffey Jr. and Ryan Dempster each had surgery, and each of their injuries was a worst-case scenario. Griffey was found to have a 50 percent tear of his rotator cuff in addition to a torn labrum; Dempster had a bone chip removed and also had Tommy John surgery.
Tuesday, August 5: Pitcher Joe Valentine was recalled from Louisville; Freddie Benavides was added to the coaching staff.
Wednesday, August 6: Third baseman Brandon Larson was recalled from Louisville; Freel was optioned to Louisville; and co-general manager Maddox said the Reds could not use savings from recent trades for players in the future. He said the money is needed for this year's budget because of an attendance shortfall at Great American Ball Park.
Thursday, August 6: Pitcher Jose Acevedo went on the DL; reliever Scott Sullivan was activated.
Remember him?
Lenny Harris, who began his career with the Reds in 1988, was released by the Cubs last week.
Harris, 38, hit .183 in 75 games for the Cubs. If his career is over, he has made his mark. He is the major leagues' all-time leader in pinch hits with 177.
