Giants 7, Reds 3

Pitching woes return, win streak ends

By Kevin Kelly
The Cincinnati Enquirer

In hindsight, the Reds could have saved their money. Rather than spending thousands to purchase a two-page advertisement in Sunday's paper explaining why they traded the present for the benefit of the future, the Reds needed only to wait for Sunday's game against the Giants.

The first three innings were justification enough for last week's bloodletting.

Cincinnati traded away four popular and productive players for eight young pitchers - potential starters like Aaron Harang and Brandon Claussen among those acquired - with hopes of avoiding many more starts like Sunday in a 7-3 loss against the Giants.

Pitching before a national television audience and 35,840 fans at Great American Ball Park, starter Jimmy Haynes failed to get out of the third inning.

The right-hander allowed six earned runs on five hits in his 2 2/3 innings before leaving with stiffness and soreness in his lower back.

"It was hurting pretty good," he said. "I wanted to try it and see how it was going to be. I got it loosened up enough to go out there and get it going.

"It just tightened up a little more each time I went out."

Haynes was on the DL from April 18-May 26 with a bulging disc in his back and likely will be headed back after Sunday.

"If he's going to go out there every five days and it bothers him, I think (the DL) is something we need to look at hard and close," Miley said. "Obviously, he's not helping himself if it's bothering him."

Haynes is one of seven pitchers to start at least one game for Cincinnati this season. Those starters have combined to go 21-50 with a National League-worst 6.14 ERA.

What was odd about Haynes' outing was the contrast between the first two innings and the third. Haynes struck three of the six batters he faced in the first and second. The six-run third was another story, or, just the continuation of a frustrating and painful season for Haynes.

"I've been pitching with this thing all year," he said. "The way it felt (Sunday) I can't do that again. I've got to get this thing straight, try to get it completely healthy."

San Francisco scored all six runs with two outs in the inning.

Left fielder Barry Bonds had a two-run single during the inning.

Reds pitcher Brian Reith came on three batters later with the bases loaded and allowed a two-run double by Giants third baseman Edgardo Alfonzo.

The injury may be the reason Haynes has pitched at extremes. Against the Phillies June 13 and Brewers July 12, Haynes allowed two earned runs in 16 innings combined. They remain his only two wins in 18 starts this season.

"It's never really been completely healed," he said. "I can get it better between starts. I've had days where it felt great going out and then I throw a couple innings and it tightens up. I just re-aggravate the same thing."

The Reds pulled to within four runs, 6-2, thanks to a run-scoring single by D'Angelo Jimenez in the fifth and a solo homer by catcher Jason LaRue in the sixth.

San Francisco made it 7-2 on a run-scoring single by Neifi Perez in the seventh.

Sunday's game capped one of the most tumultuous weeks in franchise history.

The Reds fired their general manager, field manager and two coaches Monday.

That preceded the trades that sent relief pitcher Scott Williamson to the Red Sox, outfielder Jose Guillen to the A's, third baseman Aaron Boone and reliever Gabe White to the Yankees.

Cincinnati, which received eight minor-league pitchers and $2.25-million in return, won five of seven games after the firings.

"It probably will be nice to get on the road and relax a little bit," Miley said.
