Reds Chatter

The Cincinnati Enquirer

The promise of 2003 has crashed with a hard, loud thud. Gone are Aaron Boone, Jose Guillen and Scott Williamson. Ken Griffey Jr. and Austin Kearns are hurt. Here's a look at the team that began the season:

General manager Jim Bowden: Fired with career record of 829-830, one playoff appearance in 11 years.

Manager Bob Boone: Fired with a 190-238 record in 2 1/2 seasons.

C Jason LaRue: Career-high 13 home runs, missed nine games in June.

1B Sean Casey: Flirting with .300 as usual, leads team in hits. Boone hit him leadoff twice (he has a career-high four stolen bases).

2B Aaron Boone: Acquitted himself well at second but moved back to third when Brandon Larson was demoted. The lone All-Star was hitting .273 with 18 homers and 65 RBI when traded to the Yankees.

SS Barry Larkin: Spent two stints on the DL with strained calves and also missed six games with a strained hamstring.

3B Brandon Larson: Given the job, he hit only .083 in 48 at-bats and was farmed out to Triple-A Louisville.

LF Adam Dunn: Coming off an All-Star season, he hit .193 in May and .183 in June. He went from May 28-July 22 without driving in a teammate - he had seven solo homers.

CF Ken Griffey Jr.: After a good spring, dislocated his shoulder April 4 while diving in the outfield. He returned May 13, then ruptured a tendon in his right ankle and is out for the year.

RF Austin Kearns: Was hitting .309 with 13 homers and 44 RBI in 45 games, but struggled after hurting his shoulder. He has been on the DL since July 9.

SS Felipe Lopez: Played extensively when Larkin was hurt, but hit only .213 and had 15 errors. Season-ending ankle injury at Louisville.

OF Ruben Mateo: Hit .200 in 22 games and was sent to Louisville when Griffey returned from his first injury.

OF Wily Mo Pena: On team because of his contract, hit .086 in 35 at-bats before going on the DL.

C Kelly Stinnett: The Reds are 17-19 in his starts.

OF Reggie Taylor: He's batting .169 since April 10.

Rotation

SP Jimmy Anderson: He went 1-4 in his first five starts with an 8.27 ERA and was demoted.

SP Ryan Dempster: Was 3-7 with a 6.54 ERA before going on DL Thursday, and faces possible season-ending elbow surgery.

SP Jimmy Hayes: A 15-game winner last season and the Opening Day starter, he has only two wins.

SP Danny Graves: Converted from closer to starter, he's 4-11 with a 5.31 ERA. His career ERA as a Red had been 3.32.

SP Paul Wilson: The most consistent starter, albeit with a 5.22 ERA.

Closer Scott Williamson: Converted 21 of 24 saves before trade to Red Sox.

RP Gabe White: Was 3-0 with a 3.93 ERA before going on DL June 25. Traded to Yankees.

RP Kent Mercker: Tied for second on the team with 45 appearances with 2.67 ERA.

RP Josias Manzanillo: Demoted after recording a 12.66 ERA in nine games.
