NL Games

Bonds miffed by pitcher's celebration

The Associated Press

Barry Bonds wants another swing in a big spot against Carlos Zambrano. The 22-year-old Cubs pitcher retired Bonds with the bases loaded on a soft liner back to the mound in the fifth inning Thursday, then caught San Francisco's attention with his celebration.

Zambrano pounded himself in the chest, pumped his fists twice as he walked to the dugout and flipped the ball a dozen rows into the stands at Wrigley Field.

"Well, I just try to be myself. I don't try to (embarrass) anybody. He's a big man in baseball," Zambrano said after Chicago beat the Giants 9-4. "It was a situation that was a big deal in the game. I was happy."

Bonds wasn't.

"I don't get upset about things like that, brother. He will learn respect eventually. I promise you," Bonds said. "He'll learn respect, I guarantee that."

Sammy Sosa hit a three-run homer and an RBI double for the Cubs. He hit 13 home runs in July, the most in the majors, and drove in 29 runs.

Moises Alou had a two-run double in a four-run first inning for Chicago.

Jim Brower started for San Francisco after Kirk Rueter was scratched because of stiffness in his left shoulder.

During the game, the NL West-leading Giants obtained 14-game winner Sidney Ponson from Baltimore for pitchers Kurt Ainsworth, Damian Moss and Ryan Hannaman.

"To get a 14-game winner who's pitching as well as he's pitched, you'll have to give up something," Giants general manager Brian Sabean said. "We accomplished what we needed to do, which was to bring a prize starter and hopefully get some more innings out of a starter than we were getting."

Phillies 7, Dodgers 3

Tomas Perez and Placido Polanco hit three-run homers in the fifth inning and Philadelphia finished a three-game sweep at Veterans Stadium.

Los Angeles had gone seven games in a row without scoring more than two runs. The Dodgers broke that streak with a pair of RBI single in the ninth inning.

Earlier in the day, Los Angeles got third baseman Robin Ventura from the New York Yankees in a trade for two minor leaguers. He is expected play first base in place of injured Fred McGriff.

Braves 7, Astros 4

Javy Lopez hit his 30th homer, a three-run drive that capped a six-run first inning and carried Atlanta at Turner Field.

Shane Reynolds, cut by Houston at the end of spring training, beat his former team for the first time. John Smoltz closed for his 40th save in 43 chances.

The division leaders stayed pat during the day, letting the deadline for trades without waivers expire without making any moves.

Expos 3, Cardinals 2

Vladimir Guerrero homered and drove in all three runs for Montreal at Olympic Stadium.

Guerrero hit his 221st home run, moving past Gary Carter into second place on the Expos' career homer list. Andre Dawson leads with 225.

St. Louis star Albert Pujols singled in the eighth to extend his hitting streak to 15 games. He leads the majors with a .372 average.

Padres 10, Pirates 7

Gary Matthews Jr. homered and Mark Loretta had four hits as San Diego won at PNC Park.

Jose Hernandez, Craig Wilson and Matt Stairs homered for Pittsburgh.

This was the final game between the Padres and Pirates this season, though they could be getting together on a deal soon. San Diego would like to trade for Pittsburgh outfielder Brian Giles, and wants to finalize the move in the next two weeks.

Brewers 4, Mets 3

Eddie Perez hit an RBI single in the eighth and later scored from second base on a wild pitch as Milwaukee won at New York.

Perez ended an 0-for-17 slump with his single. He chugged home when Edwin Almonte's pitch caromed off catcher Jason Phillips' mask toward the first-base dugout.
