Dave Miley was named manager, not miracle worker. So Miley's presence in the dugout for his Cincinnati debut didn't change anything fundamentally for the Reds.
Their starting pitching is still the National League's worst, and they still make errors at an alarming rate.
The result: Miley is 0-1 as Reds manager, as Cincinnati lost 5-3 to the Colorado Rockies Tuesday night before a crowd of 25,663 at Great American Ball Park.
The Reds equaled a season-high with four errors. Three of them were throwing miscues by shortstop Ray Olmedo, the most errors by a Red in one game since Pokey Reese made four on Opening Day in 1998.
"That's something we need to get better at," Miley said. "With good defense, things might have been different. All the errors played a part in the (Rockies') runs."
Starter Jimmy Haynes (2-11) was rocked for four runs on 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Miley, promoted from Triple-A Louisville on Monday, got a nice ovation from a crowd that included 4,500 walkup ticket buyers when he brought out the Reds' lineup card.
"That was awesome," Miley said.
He used essentially the same lineup Bob Boone used in his final days as manager.
"That's something I'll look at over the next few days," Miley said. "I've talked to (coaches) Ray Knight, Jose Cardenal and Mark Berry."
The Rockies scored a run in the second inning and added two in the fourth. Catcher Jason LaRue's throwing error contributed to the rally.
The Reds got a run back in the third on Sean Casey's RBI single.
Ronnie Belliard led off the Colorado fifth with a single to right. He started toward second after Jose Guillen dropped the ball, and Guillen threw to second base. Belliard scrambled to get back to first, and Olmedo's throw hit him as he slid into the bag. The ball went into the photographers' pit, and Belliard advanced to third.
Haynes got an out but allowed an RBI single to Preston Wilson, who went to third on Jay Payton's single. Reds third baseman Aaron Boone thought Ruben Mateo's throw caught Wilson.
Miley did, too. He came out to argue, although not vociferously by his standards - he was ejected five times this year for Louisville.
After a short discussion, Miley went to the mound to pull Haynes and bring in Brian Reith.
That's one difference in Miley's style compared to Bob Boone's. Boone gave starters a chance to pitch out of trouble more often than not; the only time Haynes was pulled in his previous 12 starts was when he gave up back-to-back-to-back homers against Houston.
Reith got a double-play ball to end the inning.
Reith allowed an unearned run in the seventh when Belliard reached on Olmedo's third error of the game and came around to score to make it 5-1.
The Reds rallied for two runs in the seventh. Aaron Boone led off with a walk and Adam Dunn followed with a double into the right-field corner. LaRue got one run in with a sacrifice fly, and Barry Larkin's pinch-hit double scored Dunn to cut the Reds' disadvantage to 5-3.
"We had some opportunities," Miley said. "We were a hit away."
