Sweeping changes occurred Monday morning in the Reds front offices and coaching staff, but by the afternoon, the players on the field reverted to a familiar tactic.
Hours after chief operating officer John Allen completed the changes, the Reds produced another last at-bat win, their 23rd such win, most in the major leagues.
This one came in the bottom of the 10th inning against the Philadelphia Phillies at Great American Ball Park when catcher Kelly Stinnett sent a bases-loaded single into right field for the 6-5 walkoff win in front of an announced crowd of 29,200 fans.
Aaron Boone, whose father, Bob, the manager, was among those fired, scored the game-winning run after he led off the inning with a walk from losing pitcher Terry Adams. Reds closer Scott Williamson (5-3) got the win.
"Any time you have a decent-size lead, and they come back and tie it up, and then they go ahead, it was just a hard battle," Stinnett said. "It's nice that we had the last at-bat."
Starter Ryan Dempster pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up five runs. Dempster walked four players, all of whom eventually scored.
The Reds scored four runs in the first inning. Then, first baseman Sean Casey hit a 382-foot solo home run in the eighth, tying it at 5-5.
"Those (walks) just kill you," Dempster said. "Whatever the reason was behind them, I don't know. I just got into a situation where they cost me . . . All four of them scored and it put a lot of pressure on us."
Triple-A Louisville manager Dave Miley has been promoted to interim manager and will take over those duties today. Bench coach Ray Knight managed Monday's game. The Reds, now under Miley's on-field direction, play host to Colorado at 7:10 p.m. today, the first of a three-game series.
"For us, it's an opportunity to get a fresh start and go out there and try to have a great second half," Dempster said. "Who knows what the possibilities are if you go out there and play really well and maybe play yourself into contention or play for a strong second half (going) into next year."
UP NEXT: The pitching matchups for the Rockies series: Today - Reds RHP Jimmy Haynes (2-10, 5.87 ERA) vs. LHP Darren Oliver (8-6, 4.81); Wednesday - Reds RHP Danny Graves (4-11, 5.45) vs. RHP Shawn Chacon (11-5, 4.17); Thursday - Reds RHP Jose Acevedo (2-0, 1.59) vs. RHP Chin-hui Tsao (1-0, 4.26).
STREAKING: With his 23rd home run in the first inning, Jose Guillen extended his hit streak to 10 games. Casey has hit in nine straight.
